Awhile ago, i was in the process of trying out alot of p2p programs to see which worked for me (aresp2p won .. its great) ne ways ... im now cleaning up my comp and i ran across "Java 2 runtime environment standard edition v1.3.1_04" - 17.46MB and "Java 2 runtime environment SE v1.4.2" - 61.66MB. I use firefox browser ... I cant remember what installed this ... i dont think it was always there. If not needed I would like to get rid of it for space. n00b question plz dont flame .... thx in advance.
The Java files you have are older version which you can uninstall if you don't care for Java, but some programs does need them (personally I don't care to use Microsoft VM myself!).
I would uninstall both, then go to java.sun.com and install the latest version. That is, of course, if you actually need the Java Runtime Environment. Many 'Rich' websites use it, for example, yahoo! games. Also, it is used by many programs, such as the Azureus BT client. for my uses, it is well worth the small amount of space it takes up, but your needs may very well be different.
either way, you dont need BOTH of them installed under any circumstances. For most apps/websites that use it, you could probably get by with just the standard package (the 17MB one) but I would really suggest deleting both, then installing the newest version if you are going to use it.
you don't need it, but yeah, if you run any p2p apps that use java (limewire, phex), you're gonna need it - or any other programs or web sites that use it. Or if you're like me, and your college programming course is all on java :D

The way i seen it, if windows needed it ... it would be hidden to the important program files ... xp is n00b friendly and much better. makes home-networking really easy for n00bs. The networking wizard is great. im sure i will be flamed for using windows "windows sucks n00b ... i use linux !" Linux isnt user friendly i ran it on my old counter-strike server .... but never used it. Built in system recovery and built in drivers is the best ...
oh yea in highschool i chose to party rather than study in school and checked the manual labor box. I am now going to school for GED, then going to trade school for auto-mechanics. I now work changing tires and doing brake jobs on cars. Sucks really. Its stupid to quit school .... 2-3 more yrs of highschool is well worth not being forced to work hard the rest of ur life and make no $$ .... not too late though im 18 :) If ne one cares ... sorry i needed to vent.
