    Can't Share Files!

I want to share my music and videos but everyone who trys to DL from me gets timed out!
I think it might be a problem with my router. I have cable modem through a D-Link router. i disabled the firewall on the router and the windows XP firewall but no one can ever get a connection to me. I'm on a secondary connection cuz i cant use TCP blah blah blah!
CAN ANYONE HELP ME FIX MY CONNECTION TO ACCEPT TCP AND ALL THAT CRAP? any advice on file sharing problem?

Your most likely problem is that you need to forward the proper ports in your dlink router so winmx can accept inbound connections.

To do this you need the advanced/virtual server section in your router configuration.

    You need 2 different rules.

Depending on your router interface you may or may not be able to specify all of this. If there aren't slots for everything don't worry about it just make sure that you fill the appropriate boxes that are there.

    rule 1
start , end , private port, public port should all be set to 6699. It may also only ask for service port.
    protocol tcp

server ip should be the ip address of the machine running your winmx application.
To find this in windows on that machine use start menu/ run / ipconfig or start /run / cmd (to bring up a dos prompt)/ ipconfig and it should be in the listing
It will likely be something along the lines of 192.168.0.something.

make sure to check enable box if there

    rule 2
    ports all set to 6257
    protocol UDP
server ip same as rule 1
    check enabled

The default ports for winmx are 6699 TCP and 6257 UDP.
If you have changed these settings in your winmx configuration then you will need to forward the ports listed in your winmx configuration where it asks for something along the lines of
"send /receive udp datagrams on " and "listen on port" (which is the tcp port needed)

We need to try to determine if the problem is the router or something else.

First put the winmx computer in the dmz. You don't want to run it like this for extended periods of time because it is then outside the firewall and all traffic is allowed.

To do this in your router interface you want advanced / dmz.
Make sure enabled is clicked and the ip of your winmx machine is used, as with the port forwarding rules.

Can you now connect as primary?

If you can now connect properly take the machine out of the dmz and post back carefully detailing the port forwarding rules you created.

If not there would appear to be a different problem.

post back with results and let me know the model number of the dlink router as well as any 3rd party software firewalls and versions you have installed on your winmx machine.

These days most ISPs offer firewall protection, you should check your ISP firewall also!
