    A DivX playing VCR/DVD combo....

Anyone in the forums know of a good VCR/DVD player combo that can also play DivX files? I was checking out a Philips DVP642 @ Wal-Mart and welcomed pleasent happy thoughts of not ever having to convert an AVI to DVD again, keeping original file quality, and all the rubbish a PCnerd cum MovieGeek would obviously rejoice over, and damn near bought it... except I wanted to make sure I knew what all my options were. Like anyone else out there just entering a DVD dominant age, I still have a plethora of old VHS that I'll probably never get around to converting all of, and in regards to resolution, don't know if I necessarily want to get around to. Anyways, I digress....
Any takers on this question?? Any help would be greatly appreciated... and thank you, ahead of time, for those who respond.... :)

As far as I'm aware, such a beast is not on the market. But even if there were, how much would you expect to pay for it? chances are, it'd be over $100. meanwhile, the Philips floats around $60-70, and VCRs are selling a dime-a-dozen. you could get a nice pair for $120. I would suggest you go that way.

I've got a KiSS DP-500, which is great because you can just hook it up to your computer via ethernet and it can read the .avi's striaght from the HDD. Not only do you not have to convert avi to dvd, you don't have to burn a disc at all! ...but it's expensive...

For the money, everyone who has thePhilips player seems to like it and you can' tbeat the price.

    Go for it.

Yep, I got my phillips two weeks ago. It's played every old divx that i own. I can burn a bunch of divx movies on a dvdr and it plays them.

    $99? That's a cheap xbox...

So can you read from your computer too with an xbox? I know you can stuff a 250GB HDD in an xbox, but I got way more stuff than that...

Plus you'll have to mod the crap out of it, so by the time you got the mod card, huge HDD, you've already spent as much as the KiSS...:| -Ahhh, but you can play games...

Don't get me wrong, if the xbox can stream from a pc with not too much effort, that would be awesome...

Not to answer for Munter99 but yes, my buddy has a modded xbox playing DivX/XViD files from the tray and stored on the internal HDD. You can also store game images on the internal drive so you can basically store most of your games, music, and movies all inside the xbox.

Now, if you can access all that stuff from a host pc other than the xbox via a network, that would be really tight...

I only have a gamecube - hey, no making fun, so I'm not really up on the full potential of a xbox....

To connect your xbox to a netwoek:

    http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.p...opic=8818&st=0

an xbox is £99 in the UK, and $99 in the US, as far as i know. a solderless mod chip can be bought for about £30

I got a modded xbox for £100. If youve already got an xbox you should get it modded, rather than buy a divx player

    Thanks for the link.

Xbox's are $149USD, and the typical mod board is $30USD... unless you're a master solderer, you'll pay someone anywhere from $25 to $50 more to do the work... Add a 120GB HDD for another $100 and you're over $300USD. (Although if you're networked maybe you don't need the HDD upgrade...)

I still like the idea - except a few more questions... does xbox use progressive scan and support component video? Probably not so you'll need a separate DVD player anyway if you have HDTV....

Xbox requires some modifications but is well worth it if you wish to learn more but to modify it can be tuff and is picky on big file names as well ... I'd suggest first getting a phillips if you want a project later when you have time Xbox's will only get cheaper with time.
