having a little trouble at college... :(

hey guys, i just recently went to college and they have some kinda firewall that blocks me from downloading torrents (theyve blocked all p2p but DC and it sux). Ive tried using torrent storm, changing ports, azureus pretty much everything. I dont have a software firewall on. The only way to connect to the internet here is to go through their software. its called "CheckPoint VPN-1 Secure Client". if anyone knows a workaround or have any ideas please let me know.

You could always try a campus network by sharing with people behind the firewall. using LAN2P or Foldershare or something else that does the same thing

First off, DC doesn't suck.

Second, you could attempt using a proxy, and if that doesn't work, use a secure proxy (SSL perhaps).

I believe many use HTTP Tunneling.. although I know nothing about it, but have heard good things. And I agree with FrozenShadow in that DC does NOT suck - especially in colleges if you setup a private hub within your dorm or something.

Damn. Does anyone know anything about HTTP Tunneling? Or some software that would do the job (free)... I've tried all last year to get around my school. They use a device called "Packeteer" which divides the bandwidth, etc. Google for more information. If ANYONE knows how to perform HTTP Tunneling, email me at contact [at] avalerion.com

yes i would like to know more about this HTTP tunneling if anyone knows anything post here. however i agree DC does not suck, but its sucks here because for some reason we cant make our own hubs.

Yea, I know a bit about it.

Tunneling involves making traffic look like something it's not, usually by channeling it to a different destination port than usual data of it's type. What I mean to say is, if your outgoing packets are targeting port 80, they're probably webtraffic. What you want to do, is make your traffic go to port 80 so it looks like webtraffic as well. Since you can't magically tell your packet to LOOK like it's going to 80, then switching, you enlist the aid of what's called a proxy.

Proxies are basically boxes (computers) that bounce your connection. That is, they accept your packet, then redirect it to wherever it is supposed to go. From what I can tell, all you have to do to tunnel, is use a proxy. But I'm not quite sure.

I also suggested SSL, meaning your packets would be encrypted before being sent to the proxy, meaning any packet filtering software/hardware would not be able to sniff it and toss it out. You'd probably have to find a pay proxy service for this though unless you got lucky, or "acquired" an unknowing host.

I might get around to writing a tunneling walkthrough eventually, but I'm lazy, and I'm not exactly sure of it myself. I'll try it myself sometime, maybe soon, and write one up, until then, I point you to google.

Many people use SocksCAP to tunnel, though it's not exactly freeware...

thanks for the help with the http tunneling, i know this isnt on the right forum but how come i can set up a hub on my comp (DC) but no one else can connect to it (i can but im running both hub and client on same pc)

It probably has something to do with the school network. I have no idea how school networks work (college ones anyway). Theres always someone that knows, though. :gj

Ok guys, about the tunneling at University - I found a solution. It's $5 a month but it tunnels all your data through port 80 and the University doesn't pick it up. I need to find a way to get it to work with Battlefield Vietnam though. I tested it and it works pretty well.
