    Suprnova.org Problem

Hello all usually I research and fix my troubles and don't like to pester the community with questions that you can find on your own. I am truly stumped on this new problem. I recently installed Firefox internet browser and since then I started getting this message.

    Unauthorized download

We're sorry, but this downlod request cannot be authorized. There could be several reasons for this:

    1) You clicked on a link on an *unofficial* SuprNova.org mirror. We do not allow that kind of external hotlinking. This site creates a great deal of traffic and it's hard to find a good hosting. We will not provide the bandwith for other sites. Please visit SuprNova.org and you can download all the torrents you want.

    2) You're using a download manager. But there's a solution to this problem:

Set up your download manager to send a HTTP referer, and when you click on a link on the SuprNova.org site the download will be authorized. Here's how you can do this in Getright:

Go to Getright Configuration, under Advanced/Protocol check Send "Referer" in HTTP Request and then select Calculated from open web browser page.

The setup should be similar for other download managers.

    3) Your browser did not send a referer. This normally happens if you right click on a link and select save-as, or if you copy and paste a link into a new browser window and press Enter. It may also be that your browser is set up to not send any referer. But left clicking on a link works just fine and has been tested in IE6, Netscape 6, Opera6, Firefox and Safari

Some software firewalls, for instance the Norton Personal Firewall (which is also part of Norton Internet Security) or ZoneAlarm remove the referer from HTTP requests which will block any downloads on any site that does a referer check. Hence such options should always be turned off. In Norton you have to go to the Privacy Settings and disable browser privacy (which doesn't really protect your privacy anyway as your IP address will always be logged regardless of that setting), in ZoneAlarm you have to go to Privacy -> Cookie Control -> Custom and uncheck "remove private header information".

Software like AdSubstract also blocks the referer and makes downloads impossible.

We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and hope you understand our reasons for doing so. Bandwith doesn't come cheap and we have to do all we can to keep the bandwith usage down.

I tried everything on my list disabled norton disabled all other useless programs have no ad programs running unistalled firefox reinstalled netscape and IE did a system restore and yet still no luck. For me it only does this on suprnova. On torrent reactor and other sites im lucky enough to be able to right click BUT I NEED SUPRNOVA. Any help would be appreciated.

I just checked, and I *had* the same problem as you. here's how I fixed it:

    1) go into norton firewall (left click tray icon)
    2) click "Norton Personal Firewall"
    3) click "options" on the top of the window
    4) click the "web content" tab
    5) click "Add site" at the bottom left hand of the window
    6) type in "www.suprnova.org"
    7) in the list above the 'add site' button, find www.suprnova.org
    8) on the right side of the window, uncheck all "Use default settings" buttons and click all the "permit" buttons.
    9) restart mozilla
    10) try downloading a torrent from www.suprnova.org

have you compared speeds between the 'generic' build and optimized builds? It'd be interesting to see if there is actually a performance boost. either way, I will probably be getting the M2 build to see if it will help any.

btw, I'm 99% sure that norton is the problematic source in this problem, so if you aren't using norton, chances are you wont be able to reproduce the problem, unless you are lacking a referrer or have a bad referrer.

SuprNova Cuts off Third Party Clients/Websites
    September 18, 2004
    Thomas Mennecke

For those who utilize BitTorrent sites such as Torrents.us.to to access SuprNova.org's database, as of today this will no longer be possible. After selecting a torrent link, you will notice an advisory page stating that SuprNova no longer allows third party access. In addition, third party clients such as GoSuprNova will also no longer function.

When clicking on a torrent link from Torrent.us.to or Bitoogle, SuprNova.org displays the follow:

"We're sorry, but this download request cannot be authorized. There could be several reasons for this:

    1) You clicked on a link on an *unofficial* SuprNova.org mirror. We do not allow that kind of external hotlinking. This site creates a great deal of traffic and it's hard to find a good hosting. We will not provide the bandwidth for other sites. Please visit SuprNova.org and you can download all the torrents you want...."

When using GoSuprnova, the client still downloads the database, however if you click on a torrent link the connection will simply fail, without exception. In addition, the old Azureus SuprNova plugin will also no longer function.

The reason? SuprNova.org made an official statement on their site today explaining the situation. It is a story we have heard many times in the P2P community, a story where official developers face potentially devastating problems from third party's accessing their network (or in this circumstance, database.) While some developers are concerned about cash flow, others have pursued third parties for the health of their network.

"As some of you might have noticed, SuprNova.org had some problems recently regarding its servers and .torrent download. It turned out that some of the (unauthorized) third party programs and/or sites that are hotlinking to our torrent database was poorly designed/configured, and that almost killed SuprNova servers. So we had no choice but to enable .torrent access only to users coming from our official mirrors. This policy will not change, so don't ask. :) In case you have misconfigured browser, you'll get (instead of .torrent) .html file with instructions how to configure your computer to access our .torrents.

I hope you understand our position and we ask you again, not to use third party applications / sites to access SuprNova.org!
    Thanks"

SuprNova.org does not claim financial reasons for shutting out third party access, however popular "unofficial" resources never contained any kind of advertising, hence their popularity. SuprNova uses and extraordinary amount of bandwidth; to have hordes of individuals accessing their servers improperly, or not giving an advertisement an impression, would eventually lead to dire consequences.

Thanks to DaBlade who brought this story to our attention.

To Moneoa: Although the article you posted is a worthy contribution to the use of 3rd party software this thread had nothing to do with 3rd party apllications. Although the problem is solved, this thread is about Norton Personal Firewall settings and how it influences the message on suprnova.org. If you would have scrolled down to my last post before this one you would have seen that the problem was fixed. That article would have been helpful in other suprnova threads where the person was using a 3rd party aplication. Cheers.

Errr I posted it when there was no answer
Didnt notice the submit button was hit by someone else in the interim
Sorry for not checking before I hit my submit button
and it had nothing to do with 3rd party software but revolved directly
around the error prompt you were getting and the fact IE and other browsers
will still do that on LEGIT suprnova mirrors if the http redirect is not enabled

    Sorry if I was misunderstood

Edit: Allow me to eat some humble pie friends.
The article I posted says nothing about this but this is what I was trying to pass on
Even legit mirrors will give you the error if the http redirect is disabled

You made your post of the article on Today, 02:01 AM. Although my clocks are wrong I know for a fact that I posted this a day before you posted the article. No problem though.
