SP2 Causing Problems with BT

I believe using Windows XP with SP2 has caused BitTorrent problems.

I just finished assembling a new system and installed Windows XP on it. Previously I had a computer running Windows98 and BitTorrent worked fine with that.

BitTorrent when running does not download and takes down my whole Internet access. The only way I can get Internet again is to reboot.

I forwarded the ports on my router and put my computer in the DMZ. Additionally I have tried using many of the TCPIP.SYS hacks out there that supposedly fix my problem.

None of this has worked. I would really like to get BitTorrent up and running again. Any help is appreciated.

I wouldn't go through all the trouble with SP2. I think it may just be the limit of simultaneous connections. so look for the patch by lvlord. that should help. well I hope it helps.

if test if it is, go under Administrative Tools, Event Viewer (both in Control Panel). Click on System. If you see a TCP/IP 4226 warning, you've reached your connection limit. And yeah, to get around that, get the patch (unoffical, of course) from http://www.lvllord.de/ - i've tested it, and it works great

What's this all for?
After almost everybody knows the <<EventID 4226: TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts>>, I used a day to create for educational purpose a fix for this argumentative feature.

Unfortunately there exists no REG-key which could easily be set (would be so nice and easy, right? *smile*). The file TCPIP.SYS in the directory C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS and C:\WINDOWS\SERVICEPACKFILES\I386 has to be changed (system dependend eventually in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE, too).


Needed things:
- Windows XP SP2 (from RC2 upwards) or Windows 2003 Server SP1 beta
- patcher (2.11a)
- a small amount of time

What's been done:
To say it easy: the before 10 half-open connections are beeing increased to 50 (can be changed during runtime and with the parameter /L) and the CRC is been corrected. And that's it!

Comment:
The method described here, should only be used by users, who know how to handle all the described. With the download of the here published program the user know, that changes are made on third party files. For damages in every kind I cannot be hold responsible for. Indeed, tests worked fine here. However, nothing is impossible.
Info: When error occurs, the patcher can change the TCPIP.SYS back to the original!

Instruction:
Just download the patcher and execute it. It will automatically find the windows directory and ask, if it should increase/decrease. For higher values, please check the help with parameter /?.
After a successful patch, the new TCPIP.SYS will be automatically installed. After that, the computer should be restartet.

Don't patch your system.

The connection limit thing is only for hosts that aren't responding--those are the hosts you don't want anyway. If the connection is active and the seed/peer is live, you'll get just as much throughput as you would pre-SP2.

BT is fine under SP2 conditions.

As for uninstalling SP2, I downloaded a "backup" copy off the Internet, therefore I do not own a copy of Windows XP prior to the SP2 upgrade.

I wish that lvllord patch worked, but I tried it a few times already and it doesn't. I also tried the Pyrax one, no luck.

I have no idea if this would cause the symptons you said, SP2 is new to a lot of us. Have you put on any other new software? virus protection? firewalls?

Iv had sp2 for a few weeks now and iv got no problems from any of the p2ps i use(edonkey,bittornado,ares) i think sp2 will become a target for things not working now

Heheh, well even though it may not be the root of all evil, the fact remains that it has caused problems to many.

Also I read that sp2 doesn't accept spoofed source address when using raw sockets anymore, so if you'd be interested in anonymous filesharing via source address spoofing such as sumi.sourceforge.net you can probably forget it after installing sp2.

Now that I think of it, I did not reboot into safe mode before applying Patch 2.11a. Could that be the problem?

idk, i've never had a problem with doing it in normal mode, but, then again, i'm also running xp home

if you've followed the instructios to a t on the site, idk what could be your problem. The only other thing I can think of is to run a dual os - say, use linux for p2p, and xp pro for everything else (i'd recommend early versions of windows, like 98, but problems with it only let you connect to a maximum of like 100 people)

Use the lvllord patch but: Choose a number above 400. Especially if you use several different p2p apps at the same time: BT & ed2k..etc.

My torrrents seemed to be suddenly capped at 20kB/s under sp2 and once i changed it to 500 ports i began to max out again.

I set it to 10,000.

Slight improvement, but still very slow.
