Anyone have any ideas why..My CD Burner Can't Burn properly?

I have a MSI 48x16 CD Burner that is only around half a year old. It used to be fine and all, but now WHENVER i try to burn something to a CD-Recordable it fails.
Actually on the burning softwar eit shows as the thing compeltred 100% successfuly but once I take the disc out it shows as an empty disc or nothing burnt to it, but as i look at the back of the cd it has the marks of a burnt cd. First i blamed the discts for being..cheap i guess? I tried to burn using same discs at friends house and it worked o_o.

Also my burner can burn CD-RW's normally but screws up only for CD-R (i've tried all sorts of brands of CD-R's now)

my msi recently did the same thing, you running sp2? Just trying to dysect the problem here, it's really anoying.

Perhap disabling windows cd-rw feature in services.msc or gpedit.msc (start-run - type it in)

SP2 may have restarted all the crap services your burning software shut down upon install yet never rechecks once changed.

I'm on on XP, I'm on 2k, Would that make that much of a dfference?

Maybe its not a burner at all, but in reality a chicken sandwhich.

Service Pack 2 would most definitely make alot of difference, it is still buggy and has a program list a mile long of what it is incompatible with.

I would back off SP2 untill they fix their stuff...Also I recommend you make sure you have the proper drivers for the cd drive and that they are updated to the most recent version, also reinstall whatever burning program you use and see if that does the trick.

Also right click on your CD drive in my computer and check the properties to be sure that you have writing enabled.

Check your services, Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services> and then make sure that "IMAPI CD BURNING" service is set to automatic and that the service is started.

If all of that fails to fix the problem, perhpaps windows reinstallation is in order?

Also this may be a stupid question but when you burn and the CD is reached at 100% you do allow it to finalize and eject itself dont you :]

Maybe your cd is burned but your drive is not recognising it as burned.
Cuz that happened to me awhile back. I would then place the cd in a cd-rom drive that's also on my pc and it recognised the burned cd. I then placed it back in the cd burner drive and it finally recognised it.

Weird problem but it you don't have another drive I guess you couldn't do that.

Did you take your cd that you burned and wasn't being recognised and try to view it on either another computer or if a mp3 or audio disc. Play it on a non computer player?

Try finding an updated firmware to flash into it. Its a bit risky, but I've flashed a ton of drives and never killed one. This may or may not fix your problem, but I allways like to run the latest firmware versions.

Off topic, but if you search around you can also find sites on how to "overclock" some drives. For instance, I changed my sony 48x16x48 into a Lite On 52x24x52. This not only increased my speed, but it also disabled the stupid sony "speed boost" function that limits read/writes to 40x unless the eject button is held down for a few seconds.
