A DVD question.

Hi

Having looked around sites like suprnova and torrentbits I do a DVDR search for files i can easily burn to a disk and i expect a movie to be around 4.7 gig in size.

Now how come when i do searches particularly for newer films such as chronicles of Riddick i see files that are not that big claiming to be the movie and SVCD files ? Irobot and Riddick on one dvd for 3015 Mb can this be true ???

Also what does dvd rip mean ??

Are these simply dvd versions compressed up some more ???

Can anyone clear up my confusion.

Short answer, yes.

Long answer:

A DVD rip can be, in theory, anything from 0 to 4.7 gig. It all depends on who is ripping them, and how much they are compressing the film. Often times, a DVD is actually over 9 gigs, but they have to compress it so it can fit on a standard 4.7 gig DVD -R/+R. For example, I could compress the entire Star Wars trilogy down so all three movies fit on one DVD if I wanted to. The quality would suffer somewhat, but very doable.

As for the movie Chronicles of Riddick and I Robot, the SVCD versions you are seeing are probably screeners or telesync cams. As you noted, they are relatively small files, each movie about 1.5 gigs, which explains the 3 gig total. The files you are seeing are definitely not the high quality DVD experience you're accustomed to, but compressed screener or telesync versions.

In short, a DVD rip can be a great variety of sizes for a great variety of reasons....I've seen
people jam 6 or more SVCD quality movies on one DVD.

This is a very loose term. A DVD rip is just as it implies, a movie ripped from a DVD. Typically, it is from an official release DVD, so in theory the quality should be top notch. However, the reality is that DVD rips can be of any varying quality.

So what are the actual storage capacity of a real DVD disk that a genuinne movie comes on

to add to slycktom... usually on places like SuprNova... DVD rips are about 700-800 MB, and those that are 4.7 that fit on a DVD+/- R are those that say DVDR.

The total capacity is 9.3 gigs I believe. These are the newer, dual layer DVD's that starting to pick up steam in the consumer market.

hmm pretty good quality.
hell i have ripped dvds and let me tell you the quality is very impressive.

You can make great copies of DVD's in divx format. Cropping the black screen out of wide screen versions helps divx alot in compression. DVDs have to render the whole screen, divx doesnt have to render the black portion, unless you do it wrong. Like CJ said it depends on the ripper. I've seen people totally screw it up.
