Download stops, internet stops.. aaargh (HELP)

Okey... so i dled something called bittorrent a long time ago, downloaded some file and it worked.

Some time after that a friend msged me that i had to start watching anime, so he sent me Naruto episodes 1-10. Oki, i tested it but somehow my comp freezed several times and it dident work. I thought it was becuse of bittorrent so i never tried it again. I think i have downloaded some few other files since then and it have worked good.

Now, i want to get those damn files again. So i downloaded ABC client and started!.
It worked good.. i also had another file going at the same time, both around 30-100kb/sec, then.. it happen. The dl goes down pretty fast, computer freezes temporarly for 7-15sec's 3-4 times. Then, my internet's gone.. im not happy and reminded of my old problems.
Okey, so i reboot and resume like 2 times and the same things happen.

Now i start searching on google and find some posts about other clients blabla, so i tried Ordinary torrent, bittornado (or whatever the name is), Some Alzblabla java that dident even start (so many diffrent stuff i needed i dident even try hard). All, the same thing happens!. Browse the net some more, and the same time i resume download all the time.. it crashes again n again so it makes my surfing annoying since i got to reboot evvery 30 minutes. So i see something about upload ratio blabla, so i put in 40upload max and 75% bla and max 60 peer connection (now i got it on 40).

Oh, i forgot to mention: i do NOT have any antivirus/firewall/router/zone alarm. Or anything connected between my internet and computer axcept the cord from the computer to modem and from modem to the hole in the wall. Now, it dident work,, the files i tried to download was Naruto 1-10 and/or 11-20. Tried diffrent configuration of upload and peer crap. So finally i thought it may be wrong with the files i tried to download.. so i tried some random torrent file. Before this i had checked the time it takes for the download to freeze, its around 20 mins. The solo torrent worked for over 40-50 mins. Great! so then i got naruto 11-20 on the wagon, then after maybe 10-20 mins. It stopped again.. so i tried another config thing to the one i got atm (wich is what i said before, 75% DL ratio, max upload rate: 40kb/s, mad uploads: 3, Max peer connections: 40.). And re-started the solo non-naruto torrent, it works!. Atleast for 50mins until i got another file on it .. and it stopps yet again.

AArgh.. so theres where i am now, downloading one single torrent and it havent stopped yet (think its been going for 20-30 mins now).

Conclusion: nothing ive read about and done with the config doesent seem to work,, it takes around 20 mins before it happens, wich i think its wery strange. And only when i got 2 or more simultaneous(damn english words ^^) downloads going. No antivirus, no firewall, close all programs or any procces thing.. no change!.

I got Windows XP Home Edition
Some cable/broadband thing going through the TV-network called Chello/UPC 1,5mbit DL and 0,4 mbit upload.
No antivirus/firewall or other proggs ive read about that can stop torrent.

WHAT IS IT!? i can look at my modem and see if the lighs are still flashing, so i do that after the internet crashes. And they do, so its something with the computer.

Notes: The computer can still be used, it only freezes for a shoort time when the dl is about to hit 0. I dont think its becuse of 100% cpu usage since it takes 20 goddamn mins before it happens. some OS config i have to change? WHAT?. Im going totaly insane!!!.

Its kinda long post, and i wanted to get everything in it. And my english ain the best, so it got a bit sloppy. And im a bit angry atm. But my replys after ive got answers are usally better organised, so if something i wrote strange, tell me and ill answer and explain a bit better.

This may not help at all but I thought I would mention it. It could be Noise in the cable connection. I was once having a similar problem but not with bittorrent. What was going on with my connection was the way my cable company had my connection routed (not grounded properly) which caused noise in the line. Over a period of time the connection slowly downgraded until I lost connection with my client. I called the cable company and they directed me to their site where that ran a line test and sure enough there was interference in the connection. Just enough to cause me trouble when trying to download at higher speeds as the upstream wold completely cut out and then disconnect for a few seconds. This may be worth a shot. I hope it helps I know what a bitch this can be

If you modem is connected by USB you need a non-buggy driver for it. If it's connected by ethernet you need a non-buggy driver for your network card.

dude man...you should never go online with no AV or Firewall. It wont interfere with your progs for the most part and its better to be safe than sorry. As for this prob....honestly Snowball I have never heard of something like this. I would almost say you instal AV just to see if its NOT a virus.
Be aware that especially with broadband that alot of people can get onto your machine and piss around.

Have you recently installed any "Critical Updates" that effect your information/help center for windows...

    OR...

Have you upgraded to SP1 (With the full critical update 'roll-up') or SP2 in the last 2 weeks?

If so... it's time for you to do a system restore until MS figure out a sensible way to deal with security issues.

I'm probably just "barking up the wrong tree" though.

    Peace!!!

    Mels_Smileys45:

I doubt that since this only occurs with Bittorrent, and other download/uploads works fine. But ill try to look into it, thanks.

zaphodiv: I can say that im pretty noob in computer hardware/software so 1: i dunno what USB is (yes u heard me) 2: No idea what non-buggy stuff is that you are talking about. Could any1 explain to me what it does/how to get it?. But i doubt that i will buy anything at all to this sucky computer just to get some anime down. Wich i havent even started downloading.. well i have but it dont work as you know ´=/.

moneoa: well.. i know but ive actually never had any problems with viruses or so, in my 3-4 years of surfing the web. Maybe im just lucky, hehe :). But i got some spyware i cant get rid off.. hehi. But ive already planned to get a AV-program soon, dont know exactly when tho. Could somebody tell me wich i should get?, i dont really want a firewall. Just some antivirusprogg

method: As i said before in this post.. im a newb in computers.. to some part atleast. So i dont know what SP .. or system restore is (u mean reinstall windows?) and what would it help?. And my Windows and all is in Swedish, since im from sweden. So some stuff i may not understand becuse diffrent words.. just so you know. (That is english computer-term words, not the ordinary languange.)

Edit: i saw now that i could use quote but i dont got time to. heh heh

you might need to re-install all your network drivers. sounds like you might have something corrupted.

I had some problems once that were resolved that way.
    also at another time,
I had a problem where my connection would just stop for a few seconds every 20 or 30 minutes and then resume. I could never figure it out. I finally re-installed windows and of course my internet connecttivity software and all is fine now.

I think ill give up on anime if i, dont find another way do dl it proggs like DC- no way, new Faaster internet, or until i got myself a new comp, or a burner :/.

But i wont loose so much since i dont even have started watching.

    But thanks for the help

    Edit:

I could still need some tips about what anti-virus i should use.

Re-installing your network drivers does not entail re-installing windows. re-installing windows is a last resort and really you shouldn't have to unless you actually have other problems as well.

I actually did not re-install windows to fix my start n stop, but when I did. I had to notice it fixed my problem.

Call your isp help desk and they should be able to walk you through re-installing network drivers.

    peace

I get the same exact problem..

My friends have not had a problem with this. I think its the cable modem that you buy 3rd party... maybe

I have found that 2 of my friends running comcast do not have problems with internet connection failing when downloading mass amount of stuff...

While My other friend and I do...

I think its time to call the isp.

Okay im having the same problem now using bitcomet. It will download for a while and then cut out no internet at all so I pull the plug on the modem wait about 30 seconds and then im online again. I have monkeyed around and im almost positive my download speed is the culprit, when I lower the speed it stays up anything over 60/kbs is a danger zone............I usually use a proxy so its hard for me to hit real high speeds, then I switched to default and all of a sudden a problem, im almost positive its the Isp.

Ill probably try a new nic card, maybe a reinstall on the network drivers...........who knows all I can say is this is a real pain in the ass. I also heard that comcast has a secret cap level?

It may also just be the connection, and not the torrent causing it. I fully agree with powering down the modem, and I also reboot, and while the reboot is in progress, I reconnect the power to the modem. Sometimes you just have to reset everything, and let it ping the connection again.

I guess mel smiley had a problem where there was noise on the line? Is there a program I can use to test the line myself, I cant have anything to do with the isp........I have to do everything myself>I have my reasons for this...........just seems odd that I had some decent proxies hittin speeds over 100/kbs everyonce in a while? I think they look at how much your downloading and at what speed.....I think they have limits. Downloading an old file now at 11/kbs and no problems.

    1. comcast metering bandwith
    2. corrupt network driver files
3 problem with my connection (noise like mel says)
    4. bad nic card???? I dont see how
    5. mpaa causing it??? far fetched

Im thinking it has to be the ISP I think when it hits speeds over a certain period of time they have an autokill on the line. if it keeps happening then reinstall network drivers first

I have been downloading alot now since I learned that mpaa is going after trackers and not users. So I took the blinders off(proxy) then this problem mysteriously pops up? I dont know somethings fishy hunter.

....Im also worried about this repetitive unplugging of the modem it cant be good for it?

I had this modem for 3 years, and although it has been soaked with beer many times and rebooted a hell of a lot more times, still no problem. What can I say, i used to be here 24--7?
