HELP!!!! (my isp found out i was downloading films...) MORE WITHIN!

Hi,

They have stopped my internet once for getting Norton Anti virus, i just thought that i may have accidentally registered it, but i promised "I will never download anything again", which was a total lie, and have downloaded ever since.

The other day i was downloading 2 versions of ***********, one from Suprnova, and one from kazaa. Now i have been led to believe that you cannot be traced via bittorrent (which suprnova uses), but someone told me to change my kazaa incoming port to 90, (so that they will think i am playing X-Box Live, (i do not share as i thought that was one way of getting caught).

So does changing the port thing ACTUALLY work or not? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!

Any suggestions will be gratefully received. THANKYOU!!!

This is referring to warez/illegal stuff so i dunno if its allowed, i think not. Edit the post to make it say that you were downloading copyrighted movies.

Your ip address can still be seen while using bittorrent. Whoever told you it couldn't was an idiot.

Right. BitTorrent is the EASIEST network to get caught on, because it constantly broadcasts your IP to the public, as well as the fact that you always have to share what youve downloaded.

just don't listen to what the other people are saying "your ip can't be seen"... the best bet that you have is to download peerguardian. http://www.methlabs.org/ and then update the blocklist

It just gives a false sense of security. Yes, its a good program. Yes, its better than nothing. But the word gets out to n00bs that this is the miracle program that everyone has been waiting for, and "if you use it, its 100% guaranteed you wont get sued." Thats not the case. If the RIAA wants to, they can use Comcast or SBC as their mask to get IP's.

Well lets use an example. ISP's are known for monitoring ports 80, 90 I believe, the default webhosting port, 443 I think, 1214, the default kazaa port, 6346, 8000 the default shoutcast port [I got caught for shoutcasting once]
and other ports, probably emule default ports 4662 and udp 4672?
At anyrate, whenever I axidently used default ports, shaw, my anoying isp was on my ass, so I can safely asume that they monitor default ports. Changing your port to something in the 20000-65000 should give you a prety high chance of not being monitored,

Serrebi, ummm, why would Shaw bust your ass for downloading? A) I use shaw and they don't bother me and B) It's perfectly legal to download/upload in Canada.

Remember this: Your IP can be seen all the time with any program at will. The only security you have is in numbers - that so many people are doing it you just get lost in the crowd.

Movies are no big deal as of yet, the letters are just warnings at this point, don't freak out about it.

I think peerguardian is a waste of time. If it doesn't use any CPU go ahead and install it, but don't for a minute assume you're any safer.

Newsgroups are safe, and private DC hubs, and private ftps between friends... I can't think of any more...

Homeya I have to disagree with you. Your ip address can be seen using a bittorent client because the file your downloading your also uploading at the same time which in turn shows your ip address. However if this guy is not sharing files on kazaa then he doesnt really have to worry about his ip address being targetted by the Riaa or Mpaa. IF he actually was sharing his files on kazaa then his ip address would be a potential target then he would have to worry.

and the worst shaw has ever given me was "50 gigs a month in down\up stream is a bit much dude,
try to keep your monthly bandwidth to around 20-25 gigs" made me laugh because the tech didnt give a shit what I was downloading
(yeah its all from streaming websites and checking my email btw, I listen to alot of netradio :P)
They just wanted me to keep it reasonable, I was cool with that and now for the most part keep it around 25 gigs a month.

I think its sad that Isp's in the states think they are enforcers or something...some sorry breed of cop
when all they are is an pay to play, information service and provider. Let the police invstigate and enforce any law violations.
I understand in countries where the provider might be held accountable for
content but as far as I know its been ruled that just because you provide the service
to make high speed trasfers of large files it does not mean you are incouraging copyright.

NEVER download movies off of bit torrent. The Mpaa is all over it, they can find your ip, they can track you.. BUT THey report this incident to your ISP, which your isp gives you the letter. YOUR Isp isnt monitoring you, tracking you, or watching the things your doing. The riaa/mpaa and software companies are putting out computer bots to search and catch infringers. I havent been sued, I use peerguardian and even when it kicks off 14 ips.. I know its an ip range i wouldnt want hooked up to me anyways.

I had this kinda shit happen to me when I was using comcast as has many others. Now that I am on a private cable company for the last 2-3 yrs I have had no problems with cease and desist letters. But then again I know better than to use BT for movies for the simple fact that it is copyright holder infested and by using it to download movies u are litterally giving youreself up. In any case I wouldnt worry about this letter from ur isp the ones I used to recieve from comcase would just say "please remove the specified works" or similar. the mpaa isnt getting dirrrrty yet, but ya never know. I would reccomend to stay away from bt for trading movies unless u are fond of recieving letters like those! lol they could be nice for the collection :P
