Well there doesn't seem to be a wide range of people here that like discussing the idea. A few people (including myself) have tried to shine some light on it, and alas failed.

Plus, IRC isn't really dedicated to p2p though I realize how wide spread file sharing is on it.

I think the majority of the use of IRC is still chat based. Though lots of file sharing is done, it's roots are in chat, not p2p.
    How's about them apples?

True that it is and has become a great way for p2p users to share files.. And even more so, alot of new development has came about it, that would make a program sit on top of the IRC interface, and search as well as share songs. Its very good for transfering of files, and that the only time i ever get disconnected is when the user disconnects. Even on the net splits, im still downloading. It also supports resume.

I was curious about this too, I have used mIRC for years and never got a fake. Somtimes crappy but not fake and those seem to be very common on many p2p networks especially for movies.
As far as the chat base of IRC and how people say it is too hard, there are programs like invision (my current favorite) that make it so simple you don't even type!
The main problem I've had is finding the right channel/server for a game, movie, or program. Once you find it you don't lose it. But then a different program, a different channel...... That's where p2p comes in handy.
And speaking of that why can't anyone develope a version of mIRC that searches several servers/channels like many p2p programs search more than one network?

i think it's kind of nice it's not listed as it was originally intended for chatting but also it helps keep it a little under the radar so that we don't have to worry about it getting flooded with fakes or being as monitored as other networks are plus it has a learning curve and i'm sure the forums would soon fill up here with people not knowing what they are doing or bashing it cause it wasn't as simple as point and click programs like kazaa with a pretty ui
