    winrar help

I downloaded a movie last night off a newsgroup with great speed i might add and now have 74 files to try and put together. The problem i am having is that the first 30 odd files are clearly rar files and the remaining have no apparant file type.

Im not to sure how to best go about doing things now as i am missing about 16 files for the rest of the movie. so heres the question

    1. the 40 or so files that dont seem to be rar files, are they?
    2. am i best creating my own par2 files to fill in the missing balnks or asking for the missing files off the newsgroup
    3. do i have any idea what im doing?
    4. I had trouble initially unpacking the first rar file, it said it was corrupt and to unpack a earlier version, what is this?

You probably have "hide extensions of known file types" still on in explorer options. Turn it off.
If the unknown files have an extension of .rxx where xx is a number than they are parts of a split rar file.
It's just then winrar is only associated with .rar .r01 .r02 up to about .r30 and not .r31 .r32 etc

    Not sure about recovery.
If you have one .rar file and a load of .rxx files then thats just one split archive. If you open the
.rar file and you can't extract the contents then you probably don't have enough if it and you will
have to try to get the missing parts.

you cant make your own par files unless you have the whole puzzle,so yea youll have to get them from them to repair or replace your corrupted archives.

Did you get it yet? Because I always have to click the very last un-numbered rar file for mine to unzip properly. It's not uncommon for winrar to show different file types. Just try that last rar file. And if that doesn't work, resort to clicking each one down the list until the entire file appears, then unzip with that.

    Good luck. :)

The file you want to open in winrar will be either .rar or .r01. As for recovery, if you want to see if you are missing anything, download any one of the par or par2 files that were posted with the rars and open it in quickpar. It will automatically begin checking to see what you are missing, if anything.

I never downloaded a .rar file off a newsgroup. I Heard that some newsgroups are filtering you from getting all the messages. Sbcglobal isp is filtering such newsgroups on their servers. I download rar files off of a torrent or shareaza, and never experienced a problem. Mostly that when i open the folder.. theres a extraction folder that extracts r01 and the rest in there to their own file.. Such as an album with 11 songs.
