Veteran singer Carmelo Borg launches
Sunday, 25 July, 2004
Veteran singer Carmelo Borg who won the Malta Song Festival in 1963, has issued an album with Neapolitan music "Canta Napoli".
He launched the album on Saturday at St James Cavalier, accompanied by the producer Roger Tirazona who also represented Paul Abela who took care of the musical arrangements of the album. He was also accompanied by George Curmi (?Puse') who plays the mandolin in this album.
Mr Borg said that in this album he feels that he did his utmost to do his best. "I feel that I still have a role to play in the musical scene."
Mr Tirazona said that Carmelo wanted this album to be professional and that he tried his very best to give it the style which the singer wanted.
"This album contains the creme de la creme of Neapolitan music," he continued.
George Curmi argued that unfortunately the Public Broadcasting Authority did not store old musical recordings, thus a lot has been lost. "It is not right that we have forgotten many veteran singers. These should follow the example of Carmelo and issue new albums," he said.
Carmelo Borg started his career when he was invited to perform in concerts given by various foreign singers including Domenico Mudungio, Aurelio Fierro, Joe Sentieri, Luciano Rondinella and Nunzio Gallo.
In 1963 he won the Malta Song Festival and thus participated in the Primo Festival Jonico delle Canzone in which he placed third. In later editions of this festival, he even placed first and won various prestigious prizes. In the early days of TVM, he was often invited to sing in various programmes.
During his career Carmelo did not only perform Neapolitan songs, but also Italian, Latin American and Maltese. In 1977 he had issued two singles in Maltese one of which, "Bewsa lil Malta", proved to be very popular amongst the emigrants. In 1988 he had issued another album with Maltese songs.
