Has anyone ever tried Clamwin or know how effective it is? I generally avoid getting any security tools from p2p networks, I fear they may have been tampered with or corrupt (this is probably stupid, but is this fear justified).

I never even knew it existed. But I'll do some reading up on it.

I've tried it, and it's not that bad. The only problem is that it doesn't do real time scanning (which means if you open a virus file, it won't warn you that it's a virus - the virus will infect your computer without your knowledge).

If you're looking for a pretty good free antivirus program, I'd recommend AntiVir (www.free-av.com). It's pretty nice, and a lot of my friends use it. And, I figure some people on ZP will be recommending Grisoft's free AVG, but I just want to add that under Windows XP Home SP1 (with all the latest updates), it caused explorer to crash a lot on my computer.

If you ever want to test out an antivirus program (not just ClamWin, but any one), check out www.eicar.org - they have a free test virus there (the EICAR TEST STRING) - it doesn't do anything other then display a simple message, but antivirus programs will recognize it as a virus. It's a good way to test to make sure your antivirus software is working, without the risk of lauching a real virus.

I used to have the eicar test file as my ZP sig, but i got complaints that it caused issues with AVG scanning incoming HTML and detecting it as a virus within the page.

I use avast home edition which is free although im not sure how well it works. Seems to catch the viruses, if it sucks someone let me know. Whats the best virus scanner out their anyway I hear alot of people talking about nod32 is it all its cracked up to be?

I've heard good things about Nod32 and trend micro, I quit using norton years ago because of its heavy drain on resources plus its slow scanning speeds, but from tests I've seen its seems the most accurate. Another thing I've seen is that virus scanners have detected spyware that Spybot SD missed, whether they were false positives I are unclear.

Theres a free version of norton floating out and about on the net as well. It works good, popup blocker, spam control for outlook express.. and removes adaware.2004

I used to use clamwin but I dont need it over here on Linux.

it was OK, but AVG is better.
