Bittorrent is hogging all of my bandwidth, even if I am only downloading one torrent at a time. Even if it is downloading slowly, I CANNOT browse the internet while using bittorrent. Nearly every connection times out.
I am on a cable modem connection that is shared though a router. I am forwarding six ports to my machine for use with bittorrent.
Even if bittorrent is only downloading/uploading at a combined rate of like 20-30 kB/s, which really isnt too much for a cable modem, it seems to prevent me from being able to surf the internet. What's up???
Yes, it does. I know what you mean. I know the reason. There are too many querries from other computers and your computer chokes. Mine does the same thing sometimes. It works fine if there are not too many other people downloading the same thing you are, but on a new release like I, Robot today, your computer is overwhelmed. You can try another bit-torrent client, a faster internet connection (3 meg cable), or wait until there are more seeders to handle the traffic.
I heard the freezing is due to the bad weather in canada. Actually i have heard ABC torrent is very good one to use. Im using shadow cause im too lazy to click on an installation icon. What one are you using?

On a side note, I previously used Azurues. Once, when I was using it, my computer crashed. Upon rebooting, Azureus no longer works. When I attempt to run the application, nothing happens. The program does not open up, I do not get any kind of error message, and no background process is started. Also, no error message in Windows XP Event Viewer is generated.
Has anyone else experinced this problem with Azurues? It is really not that big of a deal, because I don't mind using ABC, but I am curious as to what is going on.
ive expeerienced the internet freezing problem on azureus and abc, id suggest getting files without hundreds of downloaders. ps i live in canada and the weathers fine eh? as for the azureus crashing, then never working again problem, i had that problem on my win98 box but then after deleting everything relating to azureus and having a fresh install it worked fine again. On a side note, on my win98 box running azureus i cant seem to get updates nomally; while my xp box can get updates fine. Anyone else have that problem?

BT will crash your connection if you don't cap it's upload to about 75% of your theoretical maximum.
Download speed/no of connections has nothing to do with it.
Get a client with upload control, such as BitTornado (it has d/l control too).

When using BT my connection randomly dies out. I then turn the modem off and back on to fix it. Could this be the problem why?
For your azureus problems I'd reinstall Java. For the bandwidth duffduff you could try Netlimiter if abc doesn't have upload controls. Ask your isp what your connection speed is. Cable modems vary greatly in speed. I've seen speeds offered for cable modems anywhere between 256k and 5mbps. You are also sharing your bandwidth with other computers in the house, so your max upload speed will vary depending on how much upstream is being consumed by the other connections in your house. This also includes bandwidth used by any interactive services your cable company provides through digital set-top boxes on your Tvs, these consume minimal upstream but considerable downstream when used to stream video on demand services to your Tvs. Cable modems almost always have much less upstream bandwidth than down. Your upload speed will most likely be either 128kbs or 256kbs.
Maybe I should have used "practical" instead of "theoretical".
As an example, my ADSL connects at 36kb/s but, practically, I've never got more than 32kb/s u/l. I set BT (and emule etc) to u/l maximum of 23/24kb/s. Anything above that & internet slows to a crawl, d/l connections are lost & d/l speed suffers.
When I first used BT I got the vanilla client, with no u/l control. My connection kept crashing & I had to reboot to reset the modem. Unlimited u/l was grabbing all the overhead bandwidth needed to establish/maintain connections, so it not only killed d/ls but the line connection too.
Switched to Shadow's Experimental (now called BitTornado), experimented a bit and have never had a problem since.
the issue with azureus was a known bug for awhile i am unsure if they fixed it in newer versions, somethign to do with the coding of the exe being poorly done
