I'd guess a .key file is probably for registering/cracking a program that needs to be registered after a trial period or something?
There wouldn't be anything to really open one of those with other than either the the 'unlock'/'register' etc. feature of the program it was supposed to register or with notepad. Notepad would probably just show you a bunch or garbage tho.

It's probably a serial number type file that goes along with a program that is about to be cracked. It's that is the case, I would suggest looking for an nfo file included with it and opening that with notepad. In it (assuming there isn't more than one nfo, if there is, check them all) will be instructions on what to do with the key file to crack a program.

hypothetically speaking, key files are normally searched for and detected every time a program is run. normally, these files identify the version of the prog you have as a registered vs. non-registered, or full version vs. trial version . in order for your program to detect the keyfile, it is usually necessary to place it within the main folder of the program (same as the .exe file).
