Fast at first and then slow... why?

Ok I've read through alot of threads here but I still don't get why my downloads start off really fast (a 500meg file with an estimated time of an hour to download) and then end up slowing down to 74 hours. It's this one file I keep trying to get. Why would it slow down midway like that everytime? I'm behind a firewall but it's Zone alarm 4.5. Any clues? Thanks all

It is zone alarm, firewalls kill BT

start here http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=20569 and come back and ask if you still arent sure, include your hardware specs and any relevant info. I read today somewhere in the forums that a girl had issues with zone alarm in specific. look here and check out betamax's post, thats the person I was thinking about http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=20569

    and of course good luck

Well the reason why I wonder if it is Zonealarm is cause it starts off so fast and then after maybe 20 minutes, it slows down. I would think that if it were ZoneAlarm, it would start off slow...?? Also I don't have this problem with all the files. Just certain files.

If it is the tracker, is there anything that can be done about it?

For instance I keep getting this one error message that says:

"Error. Piece 1684 failed hash check, re-downloading it."

Always half way through this download I get this message and then the slow down begins.

    I'm on Windows 98se, 128 megs of ram p3 700.

damn...Well thats not an unusual error it just means one of your sources sent bad data. It just gets it again from another source. That error has never crippled me like that....Maybe you have bad ram???
This is lifted off of bittornado home page, check it out:

    Corrupted downloads may be caused
by bad RAM in your computer!
Try running the tool from memtest.org to check

You said you have read a load of posts. Does that include my guide? What colour are you getting?
    What client are you using?
You say "...downloads..." and then you say "...this one file I'm getting..." Which is it?

Sorry if these questions sound abrupt, I am nice!

If you are even slightly concerned about your BT speeds, please check this thread.

I'm using Bit Tornado and I'm on blue. And when when I said "this one" file it was as an example, I don't get this error on all downloads but I've gotten it on more than one. Enough that I started worrying that something might be wrong. And it's ok, the questions don't sound abrupt.

On BitTornado, blue means that not all the file is available. There may be a seed that you aren't connected to. This means that you have to wait for the file to reach you. Because of the way BT works, the file should reach you fairly quickly, but you still can't download faster than the seed is uploading it.

Click on "Advance" and look at the speeds your peers are getting. Compare yourself to those who have downloaded the same amount or more of the file as you have (completed column). This will indicate if it is the torrent running slowly, or something your end.

Ok I checked the completed list and everyone has around the same amount completed. about 60% and everyone has 0kb per second download speed so I guess it's the file then. I'm actually downloading at 1kbs right now, so I guess I should get this file by the end of this year...lol

Also, if you sustain a good download speed for a short period, and then drop down, it could be that you're not uploading to others (caused by firewall/router). They're uploading a piece to you, realizing you're not giving anything, then you're losing credit and they're not uploading to you anymore. This is because BT works on a credit system.

In any event, if it’s not just this or a few instances of no complete sources for the file (blue), it means you need to open up your firewall or forward ports in your router.

so I guess I should get this file by the end of this year...lol
Maybe not. If noone has a completed copy, all of you, eventually (considering everyone present, stay that way), will be missing a certain part(s), and you'll all be fucked.

Thanks for the info buddy. Do you have any idea with a firewall like ZoneAlarm what I need to do to allow uploading? Cause when I got the notice that BT was trying to access the net, I clicked on yes and thought that would be the end of that. I'm starting to think that no one has this file complete, the one I'm trying to get right now cause even when I stop it and resume, I'm still at the same speed. So if it was due to my not uploading, I think I would at least start off good again and then slow down. It always stops at that same point.
