Question New Broadband - what settings please?

Recently had an ADSL connection (512k/128k) installed. It's with Easynet, who provided a Lucent Cellpipe 20 series modem/router. This provides NAT and DHCP and has a single output port which is connected into a 5 way switching hub into which are also connected my desktop and a laptop. The modem/router is configured by Easynet when the WAN connection is made and I can't change anything about it.

I am also running the free version of Zonalarm for basic firewall protection.

What settings should I be using for WinMX to optimise it please? I'm getting a lot of "Timed out" type results when I get to the front of the queues and I'm wondering if I might not have WinMX set up properly. Most of the tracks I'm after are pretty old and/or obscure with few sources and mostly I'm finding them on OpenNap networks if that is relevant.

Tell about your PC, Windows version, and RAM

    What NIC do you have?

Did you disable the XP Firewall?

The PC is a 650MHz P3 with 384M RAM & 40G HD running XP Pro with the XP firewall disabled. The NIC is an ADMtek AN983 10/100 PCI adapter.

make sure that you are using a Secondary Connection (rather than primary)

One other thing you may try is to go into Winmx "settings" and set "pending download timeout after" to 300. This may help in some cases. Until Krell comes along and helps with the tech problem
