I'm not sure if I understand your post correctly, but
if you are trying to connect to a remote computer
using ftp, you need the password and username
assigned to you by the admin of the remote computer.

If you have both of those, you could use IE to connect.
    For example type ftp://[email protected]
after that you'll be prompted for a password.

You could also use a program such as Cute FTP.

    right try this instead
if i understand correctly you want peeps to be able to connect to your machine and dl stuff yeh?

right you need to know ur ip
i suggest getting a static one from no-ip as it keeps your from having to tell people your renewed ip every time it changes

you also need a server proggie i reccomend
    G6 bulletproof ftp server
    and also
    Serv-U ftp server

there are others which are available but these are the most popular choices

    now

install the server program and choose your root folder
by this i mean the directory you want others to see
btw dont be a space monkey and choose c://windows or sys32
now you have your root choose a user and create password, in both apps you can define the users
levels so what they can and cant do, i personal unless you want people to be able tyo upload to u which most wont do, take out deleting capabilities and write

oh one last thing is to choose a port for your ftp server from to work,
standard is 21 but try and change that to somerthing dofferent that isnt already being used

    hope this helps mate

oh and another thing ignring the guy above
dont bother with IE try flashfxp its the greatest,
you can get it from anywhere these days
you want aty least vesion 2.1
    at the very least

XP has only one FTP client other than IE that I know of, and that's ftp.exe and I doubt many people know how to use it. To invoke (run) it, do the following:

    [Windows Key] + [R] --> "ftp" --> "o ftp.site.net"

Then follow onscreen instructions. Type "help" for more help. Remember, it's text only, the way the great gods of computers intended.
    How's about them apples?
