    Ripping Streams

Slashdot ran a story yesterday about p2p users turning to ripping for new music. In the story Slashdot mentions a cool tool to rip broadcast streams, check the program out here: http://www.ratajik.com/StationRipper/

-EAT AND SLEEP. YOU MIGHT THINK THAT'S A GIVEN BUT NO-IT'S NOT. EAT AND SLEEP. IDIOT.

So when a DJ starts playing an 'exclusive' track it doesn't remain exclusive for long ;)

It's OK if you don't mind some DJ yapping all over the tracks. I can't stand those mixtapes when all you hear is "SHOUTOUT TO WHOEVER!" or "DJ CLUE!" every two seconds.

But to be fair stream ripping tools have been out there for a long time. It's just that the majority have ignored them in favour of CD ripping tools.

Ya I have been using Total Recorder to record songs I download from the lovely Napster 2.0 (thanks Penn State...) So no need to spend a buck a song, just play it and record the stream :)

Well considering I have to pay for it no matter what, it is easy to find most of the bands I look for. However it only streams at 96 Kbps and the downloads are 128 Kbps WMA, so the quality isnt spectacular. For example I downloaded Audiovent, Incubus, Adema, TRUSTcompany and a few others last semester.

So usually I rip the song from napster, see what it sounds like, and if I want it better quality I just download it.
