Can anyone recommend a simple-to-use and effective video converter that will convert AVI files to MPEG? I've tried tonnes of freeware and shareware demos, avi2vcd being the most recent experiment, and most either have numerous limitations (eg can't convert compressed files) or simply don't do what they say, leaving the video quality extremely poor, or in one case just a black screen with only audio.
See, my DVD player can't read AVI files, and I've got tonnes of them on my hard drive waiting to be converted, burnt and enjoyed in the comfort of my lounge room. Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.
Aye, virtualdub will not convert avi to vcd, only help you to rip the wav file. The nicest freeware for converting avi to vcd is TMPGEnc.
Just to let you know, each time you'll hit a 15000mhz file, you might considre converting it to 44100mhz before encoding it. Why, just try it and you'll know. 45000mhz files converted through TMPGEnc will sound like it's been fisteres though a tin can.
TMPGenc....or something like that...a good and fast mpeg encoder...free too!
Ahh.....guess I could benefit from reading the thread before responding eh?
In that case, I second miss_silver's opinion :-)
another simple one is called vcd gearOriginally Posted by miss_silver
you will need virtual dub as well or avi 2 wav to get the audio uncompressed

I found the Doom 9 guide more helpful. The software was easier to acquier.

The best converter I have and downloaded is WinMpeg video converter, it will convert from avi to mpeg, vcd, dvd, divx just about any format. avi2vcd also works but is extremely slow (4-8 hours to convert 1 file). Another good program to have is DVDXCopy (works great for renting and copying DVD movies, provided you have at least a DVD burner.
Cool, I was looking for something a bit faster. I'll take a look.
