Exclamation IE keeps closing, no error message. HELP!

For the past couple of days, Internet Explorer has been suddenly slamming shut for no apparent reason, and no error message is being shown. We're using XP, 3 users, and all three of us have had this happen.

Norton came up clean. Will System Restore help, or is this something else? Please help ASAP, this is getting to be really annoying!

Have you run Spybot or Ad-aware or both of them? Make sure they are updated before running them too. I may also be inclined to run an online virus scan...that's if IE will stay opened long enough for that. It certainly wouldn't hurt to try a system restore. You could also try uninstalling and re-installing IE. Keep checking here for help as they are many good techie people here at ZP that will have lots more advise. Good luck!

    Thumbs up

I run SpyBot a couple of times a week, but will definitely run again, as well as trying a System Restore. Also updated Norton once more and will re-scan. Will get back to you guys if this doesn't help.

Thanks for the prompt replies. :heart

I've had that happen but only because I accidentally added my start up page address to my pop up blocker's list of banned sites, that maybe you're problem but I highly doubt anyone would do something that stupid like I did

    Cool

    Ok, everyone; update:

It seems the culprit was our old friend New.net, which SpyBot tries (yet fails) to remove. It's well known for crashing IE.

This page http://www.pestpatrol.com/pest_info/de/n/new_net.asp has some very thorough uninstall info, since manually deleting the .dll can screw up your internet connection. They list five different removal procedures, but I chose to run the downloadable uninstaller and it seems to have worked.

Aside from this, we also discovered that my brother's user window had the firewall settings on low. I nearly passed out and died, but that's been taken care of, so hopefully things will run more smoothly from now on.

I run both ad-aware and spybot. You may be surprised what the other one misses. I'm glad your problem is solved though.
