its true - i recently called them up to upgrade my cable HD package and asked what is the news on thier cable internet and the guy told me they will be offering new package deals this summer or ealier . Yes they did downgrade me before - first starterd with 1.5/256 then they increased my download and downgraded my upload to 2mbit/128 now they will give me 3mbit/256 - the paper came in the mail just last week - all for only 40 for me since i have the combo HD with hbo cinimax and showtime an a bunch of other crap and thier internet - so i will be paying about 99.00 a month now for cable and internet - and what they offer in HD - its pretty coo - just wish i coul have switched my dam calbe TV to DISH - but could not get thier service.Originally Posted by Mels_Smileys45

i suggest you give them a call right this moment and ask them what speed you will be recieving. just check up on your account and let me know what they tell you.
this thread inspired me to compare the prices of internet services around my area. Basically, we are limited to 2 high speed ISPs in this small town. The one our family is on, a fairly local company, is DiversiCom/Mainstree Communications. The other availible ISP is charter. I looked up the Speeds one could get for $40 a month, which is the equivilant to what we are paying now. (we have a package deal where phone/tv/internet are all included, and we really pay about $35/mo for internet, but as a standalone service, they charge $40 for our speed) We currently are getting 256kb down/ 128kb up. on the otherhand, for the same price ($40) charter has 2mb/256kb. thats an 8 fold difference in download, and 2 fold difference in upload. what a crock. tomarrow, im going to tell my dad this, and maybe we can switch. Add in the fact that you guys mentioned charter upgrading its services to 3mbit, and I'd be in heaven. that would be 12 times my current speed.

I am going to have to check on this as well, Charter is my other ISP, and I still get the 128 UL speed, bah.

To increase the Increase your internet speed:
By default microsoft reserves 20% of bandwidtth for windows update. You can increase overall bandwidtth by 20% by setting in to 0% for windows update.
Do the following steps.
1) Goto Start->Run
2) type gpedit.msc and press ENTER
3) You will get a window "Group Policy"
4) Goto Administrative Templets->Network->QoS Packet sheduler.
5) Select and double click on "Limit Reservable Bandwidtth" option in right panel.
6) Then click on Enable and change reservalble bandwidtth to "0%". THEN MAKE FUN WITH 20% MORE SPEED.
Note: Even it is by default disabled but still it reserve 20% bandwidtth. So you have to enable it and set to 0%.

The post about Windows reserving 20% of the intenet speed is simply not true and hasnt ever really been true.
Unless QOS packet scheduling can negotiate QOS packet delivery with another QOS device, it is of no effect at all. One would have to really work to correctly set it up on their router etc.
Even if one thought that it had some bearing, they could simply deselect the QOS in the tcpip properties dialog box.
If you use the TCPOptimizer, then you can tweak your connection, but in Windows 7 the default settings are sufficient.
Turning off IPV6 can reduce work and traffic, but even that's negligible.

is not enough to know average speed.
It very much depends on if the ISP as an example offers 100/10 or 100/100 or whatever speed on a T3 connection. Usually when you sign up it says somewhere what max and min speeds you can expect.
A 100 Mbit download shold for example give you 12 MB/s download speed.
The rates are confusing but ISP's usually tell the connection you can expect in Mbit/s. Often like "3 Mbit/s speed" but usually does not mention as clearly the uploadspeed you can expect. Upload is usually much lower.
Then if its a cable, T1, or T3 etc has less to do with the speeds you will get.
You could for exaple sign up for a 1 Mbit package even though you are on a T3 connection. The ISP would then limit your speeds accordingly.
