    Post Your Little Known Freeware.

I thought i might start a thread where people could post little known pieces of freeware that they find useful, but others might not know about.

So don't go posting stuff like winamp, AVG or firebird which everyone knows about.

here are a few that i like:

GuildFTPd The only free ftp server i know of. Easy to configure, but advanced enough to support more knowledgeable users. Still in pretty early development so it should be expected to advance a some.

40tude dialog This newsreader is incredible for a piece of freeware. I used to use forte agent, the most highly rated shareware newsreader, and this is similar except it is more fully featured (supports yENC, multiple servers etc). The best newsreader i have seen.

JAlbum A tool for taking images and making albums out of them for publishing to the web. Very easy to use.

    Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier

The program allows you to attempt recovery of files from a physically or logically damaged disk. The program will attempt to recover as much data as possible without giving up once an error is encountered. The program allows recursive copying of whole disks or simply a single file. This program isnt just for recovering damaged files it can be used for any copying. It is also useful for copying data when the copy process may be interupted at which stage you can simply use the resume function to continue.

i use it heaps...especially good for getting mp3`s off corrupt or scratched cds...

one of my favorite apps, reguardless of cost or popularity, is Kmp3. it is essentially the swiss army knife for mpeg audio files. it uses Freedb to rename tunes properly, has a manual ID3 tag editior, single or batch file renamer, name cleaner, tag remover, CD burner (might require 3rd party software, i dont know for sure), playlist creator/checker, file lister, duplicate remover, and a quality analysis among other things. one would expect this to be extremely bloated, but the download is less than 1 MB, and isn't that bad on memory either (6-13MB)

there is an 'expert' version, but i cant really find anything that would lead me to believe that it is actually any better than the normal version other than the fact that the expert version comes with support on their part.

http://www.steffengerlach.de/freeware/ Scanner is a very useful disk management tool, the exact totals for hard drive space are a bit sketchy at times but it shows an excellent relative size graph, great for figuring out where the hell all your hard drive space went (like when you dropped 90% of a big torrent in a weird place and forgot about it)

wtf is this? Do you even bother to read what a thread is about before you post in it? As i made crystal clear in the thread title and in the first post this is a thread about little known freeware. That means the apps you mention should be

    A) Freeware, and
    B) Little known

As a bunch of people have already pointed out not a single one of the apps you posted qualify on either respect.

Anyway, some good posts in this thread - apart from this idiocy by shawners.

    Here are a couple more.

hiderpx cpugenius showed me this. Its a very simple app which allows you to view hidden windows. This can be useful in those situations where explorer crashes and some of your windows become hidden when you restart it.

setbrowser another simple tool which only performs one function. In this case it forces the default browser on your pc. This can be useful if you have firefox or opera as default browser but some applications still try to open links with IE.
