Absolute best media player for what files you speak of...

    Media Player Classic.

I'm sure many will agree with me on this one.

But most of the time I just use the media player in Ares. Even though thats not really a media player.

btw you can check out our very small, but kinda cool media player section http://www.zeropaid.com/php/filesharing.php?id=73

For all downloaded video if you have BSPlayer and VideoLan(VLC) you will always be able to play it at its best. VideoLan is good for discs too.
For downloaded audio Foobar is good but if you want lots of colours/toys look elsewhere. Version 0.7 and newer are easy to use. Foobar can play compressed/archived files, that is rar and zip etc, which means if you download complete CDs in a zip/rar format you can listen without decompressing. This is excellent for releases that come as an ape and cue file, you dont even have to burn a CD, foobar treats the cue file like a playlist.

With these three media players installed you can play anything at highest quality, and you should be able to play even the most screwed up rips you find.

If you watch a lot of DVD on your PC then WinDVD Platinum 5 is probably as good as software players get, superb picture and sound, nice GUI and it's widely available *cough*.

Also for DivX the basic DivX player from DivX is excellent.

If you have these then chances are you'll never use WMP again.

VLC, BSPlayer and Foobar are all free. WinDVD is..er..widely available.

There isn't any popular format called .vcd or .svcd (once I saw a .divx encode of Haunted Mansion). Anyway, you need to look for .mpg, which is already a vcd, kvcd, svcd or ready to burn format.

If you want your own conversions then you can look for .avi and just convert that to VCD using the Doom9 tutorials.

Also, there are ready made images of VCD's and SVCD's so you can also look for those. Usually they are large separated archive files compacted using WinRAR.

    Hope that helps

what do you mean .mpg is already vcd etc.? so i can just burn the mpg to a cd and it will work on my home dvd? do you have to change the file to .vcd?
