    Heres what I suggest . . .

One, stop posting every 3.5 minutes, and learn to search. yah, I know it pisses off 99% of the people that ever get told that, but, tough tits, it's true. You have YEARS of information at your fingertips so read the forums and search first.

"cos everyone seems to agree and disagree with what is good"

There ya have it. Take piece of advice # 2, go to forums that specialize in what your looking for, like VCDHELP, etc etc, and read the tutorials, and do Google searches.

heres a search using the word "codecs"

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...UTF-8&q=codecs

    wow.

Try that again with "gspot" and see what you get.

Now, heres an example of how one would look in the upper right corner of the Zero Paid web page for the English word "Search" and click it, then, in the space provided for said search, insert the word "gspot" . . .

    http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/search.php?searchid=75225

Read more, ask less, and try some things yourself, and you'll get further.

...why must people ask help for everything? I get a great sence of pride knowing I can do things on my own without asking anyone else. Google is your friend.

    Heres my Recomendation-
    Radium Mp3 Codec
    AC3 Decoder
    Mpeg2 Codec
    FFDShow
    OggVorbis Pack
    Real Alternative
    Quicktime Alternative

Download all these.. and to be safe restart each time you install one.

Radium is for higher quality mp3 listening.
    AC3, Selfexplanitory
    Mpeg2, Same
FFD show basicly is your all in one Mpeg4 (Divx, Xvid, 3vid, all those) controller.. its possibly the best thing for video on the net ever made.
Oggvorbis pack contains a lot of useful stuff for Ogg audio.
Real alt makes it so you never need that bloatware REAL player.
Quicktime is the same, No bloated qucktime.

NEVER download a codec pack.. always download individualy. If theres a movie that you cant play. Download Gspot and see what it says is the needed codec..and then search google as to where to find it. But basicly that setup will play 99% of the video out there.

Hope somone gets some use outta this post.

In all fairness, I disagree with the statement to never download a codec pack. If you are jusdicious, and a bit practiced, then even Nimo will work well for you.

Another one I found recently was the Codecs6004_allin1.exe which I didnt have a problem with, I like the operability of it. There will still be times when you need another codec tho, and use Gspot.

Compugeek was telling me that the software in the link provided by ferrarimodena360 was a no brainer, I think you should check it out, since thats an endorsement by two senior and savvy members.

    EDIT

btw . . . I just installed it, i'm happy with it so far. It doest give me the click to skip ahead functionality the way I would like it, its a bit clunky, but otherwise, seems to do ok.

Also, I just installed the ACE Mega Codec Pack . . . this is like 50Mb, it has everything in it . . . you just have to see it to believe it. This includes the WMP Classic, and BSPlayer, GSpot, AVI Preview, editors . . . .

Actually krell.. Ace is the reason why most A/V people recomend not using codec packs. Its packs like Ace that can cause huge conflicts and possible errors that only a good format can heal.

cheers for the advice ppl... guess i took the rap for what 90% of the ppl who post do though...lol...

i downloaded the latest k-lite codec pack version 2.24 Full...

i have read that you shouldnt install all of the codecs at once... im only interested in the decoders so i checked that option... but how many codecs is it safe to install... i was going to start out with the MPEG one cos thats the one i need for now... but can you uninstall codecs later? or will they just keep clogging up?

True, installing too many codecs CAN constipate a system, and in those times, I find that if you UNinstall everything, most of what you want to play will still work.

However, I just installed both of the above codec packs, and my files play well, no conflicts.

So either keep trying piecemill, or try all inclusive.

as far as playback you can't go wrong with ffdshow. Get the Matroska pack also. It's the next container coming.

I recommend Nimo Codec Pack...you will literally never need anything else...you just have to disable the XviD codec as well as ffdshow in the installer...and d/l your own ffdshow, which can be found on sourceforge :D
