    My AUP violation-

I'm sure we've all seen these letters at one point or another, Heres mine that I got yesterday. I won't post the whole letter, just the file info-

    Notice ID: XXXXX

-Well I replyed to this email with this:

    From: "Me" <"Me"@cox.net>
To: Cox Abuse Tracking System <[email protected]>
    Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2004 18:43:50 -0700
Subject: Re: [3.15.2004 XXXXXX] Notice of AUP violation

Any and all Copywritten material attached or related to the file in
question have been removed and compleatly whiped from my system. Sorry
for any and all inconvience to Cox and Colombia Pictures.

-Cox then sent a automated reply, I figured that was the end. But this morning I get up and there is yet another email from Cox.

    Dear Customer,

Thank you for the reply. Many people are not aware that most file sharing programs place downloaded files into a 'shared' directory that will allow others to see and download these files from them. We understand that you were likely not aware of this. We recommend that users of peer-to-peer networks disable the 'sharing' feature of their client to avoid future DMCA complaints. If the materials listed have been removed then everything necessary has been done. We appreciate your help in resolving this matter. If you have additional questions, please let us know.

    Sincerely,

    Cox Abuse Team

-Well, I'm now going to Offically say that Cox Rulz, They said straight up said "You dont need to stop downloading, just don't upload." I'm definatly liking cox a lot more now.

Edit- I am now using Emule and Azureus's blocklists too. :p

actually i downloaded tons of music and never got any warning, only when i downloaded a movie i got a warning because the file was found on xolox 2 years ago.. after that i have never recieved any letter from ISP. So far as i know, RIAA isnt trying to do that to anybody.

Ditto_n, they say 'do not upload' because if everybody does this in the long term this will be the end of peer2peer networks.

They know that a large chunk of broadband users use bb only for filesharing. If there's no filesharing, then why do I need a 3Mb connection? Just to check email? I don't think so.

Yeah its a well known secret pretty much. Everyone knows it but no one at the companies will admit it obviously. If I had no access to ANY sort of file sharing or network program, my net connection can be downgraded to phone line again. Because then all I would be doing is basic web browsing and email. And they dont call for me paying a 45.00 bill every month.

How do you people get caught for downloading. I have been the father of 6 different fims from Bittorrent and have posted them on suprnova and various other sites with the name Movieman33. You may have downloaded some of my feature presentations :}. But i have never gotten anything and i rip and share with 1000's.

luck (or lack thereof) of the draw i guess... but i wouldn't go around bragging that you are supplying vast amounts of people with copyrighted material... luck doesn't last forever.

They are limited to movies and software. Our friends in the RIAA don't warn before they issue subpoenas.

DMCA takedown orders forwarded to customers by their respective ISP's are, as far as I can determine, limited to two movie studios: Paramount and Vivendi Universal (Not surprisingly, both MPAA members).

Only one television show has caused a downloader to receive a warning, and it was a Paramount production (Star Trek TNG).

I have seen takedown orders issued by three software companies: Adobe (for the Mac version of Go Live), Microsoft, for the portion of their OS source code that ended up on the 'net, and Symantec for Norton SystemWorks.

Obviously, just because that's all I've seen doesn't mean there aren't any number of others. You can do your own research to see what the investigators are targeting: Enter "infringing filename" (with the quotes) into your favorite search engine and look at the results. What you will see are examples posted in forums and blogs by people from all over the world.
