Just installed Peerguardian V1.99 and in its log it says that some ip from "microsoft corp" was trying to connect to me and really i am not sharing anything that should upset them- this worries me a little. Is it Normal?
Peerguardian's ip to hostname can be off. I doubt Microsoft's IP is tracking you.
Are you on a P2P network? Which one?
I chekked the blocked ip on www.dslreports.com/whois and it confirms that the IP belongs to the Microsoft corporation. I am only on DC++ and downloading some Torrents.
There was a story on slashdot that MS is scanning p2p networks for the leaked win2k source code.
Keep in mind that Peerguardian ips that it blocks are user submitted and some are broad ranged or block things that have nothing to do with p2p.. Which some people panic and freak out so anyone shouldnt take it 100% seriously. Doing a WHOIS and trying to find out more which is what you did is the right thing to do.
it sounds like if ur not sharing the 2000 source code, ur ok.
Aaaaaaarrrggg
Amdrescher . . really . . . what vested interest would MS have in tracking your BT usage? MS is the least of your worries when it comes to BT.
Get back to the basics here, we all know that the O/S is one chatty bastard. Your Services report back etc, so use Blackvipers site to get that configured properly. Also, if you had launched MSN Messenger since your last reboot, that may be it. What about your hotmail account?
I'm not suggesting that MS doesnt do trend analysis on their products, but with no more to go on that what you reported, give up in that conspiracy theory. Compugeek has a comprehensive list of IP ranges that can be imported in to Sygate Pro. This way yo get firewall protection from a single app trying to grap and analyze IP addresses.
Lock it down, and dont let your apps talk out on the net, I have said this before, you dont need a firewall to keep hackers out, you need a firewall to keep your own data from chating out!
.
compugeek how about giving us that list that krell is talking about?Originally Posted by Krell

If you need good, well-researched lists visit peerguardian.net and bluetack.co.uk too!!

Yeah, i have a MSN messenger open pretty much all the time. Maybe thats it. Other than that im just Downloading a Microsoft ofice pack, maybe thats it. All the names that peerguardian posts in its log for the ips are right acordong to "Whois"
Just wait until you install one of the alphas of Windows Longhorn.
That will try to chat with Microsoft quite a lot. I guess ol MS is real interested with Longhorn product feedback with their new alpha.

Well, not to the "general" public. Microsoft released an alpha (PDC) version of Longhorn to MSDN subscribers only a little while ago.Originally Posted by Amdrescher
There also have versions of alpha Longhorn floating around the internet for many months now.
