i was reading some searches on ppl getting warning from riaa by using bittorrent and i think i will stop using it for a while haha. its been a great program for movies! i actually thought it was more safe for some odd reason than kazaa... i mean its exposing ur ip directly onto the screen if ur using ABC or Azureus how safe can that be?! oh well.

You're taking a risk. It's up to you to choose whether or not you will accept that risk.

BT leaves you very exposed. I love to use it, but I do so in moderation. Like Ken says, your always taking a risk though. But BT's "honeypot" is a set up waiting to happen.

It will be interesting to see whether the RIAA and/or MPAA are able to sue BT users. I think they've avoided edonkey/Overnet users not because they are not aware of those networks, but that they know that it will prove difficult to sue someone who is sharing partial files. And then there's the fact that BT is not a network per se--sure, you can join a torrent and get a log of every IP address in it, but there's only one file being shared. It's a lot easier just to hop on FastTrack and find some newb who shares his or her list of 1000 shared files.

true. thats exactly why i thought bt would be safer because i'm only sharing partial part of a file and not whole. but time will tell whether riaa or mpaa would start issuing their letter of piss.
Partial or whole does not matter. You are still sharing part of a copyrighted property. With BT its alot easer to pin piont whos helping spread the latest copy of (insert new movie here). There have already been cases of people getting letters from their ISPs for sharing partials.

the MPAA busted me using bittorrent and got my isp to shut my connection down for 2 days.i don't use it much anymore and when i do i don't download new movies and i keep peer guardian on when downloading.

It still boils down to whether or not your isp will fold under pressure. I love BT, to me only usenet is better and I will continue to use BT.

Ok lets say I use BT, and they find my IP is linked with a specific torrent. Can they bust me just for that or would they have to prove that I specifically am sharing that file. For example, try downloading it from me.Originally Posted by RecalcitrantX

well like ken said if u are using any p2p client and sharing files publically you are at risk from receiving a letter from the riaa or mpaa.

well i think BT is safe since, even if they do log your ip while ur downloading/uploading a file, they only know that you've been sharing one file. Most of the cases where people have been prosecuted for filesharing, they were sharing many songs/movies for them to be significant enough to be sued.
I don't think anyone will be prosecuted for downloading/sharing 1 movie file, since you can argue that it was a one-off thing.
its worthy to point out that if you have a Dynamic Ip (meaning its constantly being reassigned) Tracing you is piss water after the fact because they could never prove who initially had that Ip address at time of infringement.
On the same token, by the time they get to the lawsuits that Ip will be attached to some other fool. thankfully with the canadian recording industry gearing up for yet another usless petty battle high speed providers here are telling them to take a flying leap
Since its one file involved when you are caught with BT, I don't see ppl getting sued directly by the industry. However the standard cease and desist letter might be sent by the ISP. Wither you get cut off or not depends on the policies and the customer agreement of the ISP involved.

Since its inception almost 30 years ago, the internet has been transformed from a primitive device for sharing thoughts and ideas, into a massive network where people pay to connect and read advertisements they don't want, while calling each other "asshats".
You would have thought that they would have to download some of it, else as Method pointed out, you could have your upload set to 0.

i'd just like to point out that your isp keeps a log of your ip adress. so they can always tell at what time u had what ip adress, and when the recording industry subpeona's your isp, they still have that info and have to hand it over.
