Question ANY BT client uses 100% CPU after a while

I've got quite a problem with (any) bittorrent client. I hope that you can help me.

    1. After a random time (sometimes 10 min, sometimes an hour) one (even if I am only downloading one file) download will completly stop. By stop I mean that the client will say that it is still downloading at say 20 kb/s but it doesn't. It isn't doing anything anymore.

    2. If that problem occurs then the client will use 100% of the CPU which makes things worse

I can solve this by pausing the download (not on hold, a real stop) and then if I continue the download it will work fine for a while but then it will stop. This occurs with ANY client, and ANY torrent (only if the download is only 1 file).

I tried 4 clients, I tried uninstalling them and trying again, I tried installing python and I even formatted and installed a fresh windows!! But the problem still occurs
    Can you help me?

I am having this exact same problem.

I'm using windows XP and have an AMD XP 2200 and 1gb of DDR RAM

I've tried lowering the max peer connections as suggested by some people but this has absolutly no effect.

It seems no one can answer this either as I've spent hours in irc rooms trying to get an answer.

Can I ask, Have you been attacked by any viruses or trojans lately?

I got blaster and pirate.B but now am completely rid of them yet I have this problem and am wondering if they have left some damage. Like you I have tried all the major BT clients and get nothing.

This is now pissing me off so much I'm offering £10 through paypal (yes really) to the guy who says... oh you just need to do this....

failing that any possible longshots are welcome to as I'm fast running out of ideas!

my bt works fine. try using shad0w's client. It's tiny. also try lowering your refresh rate in the options. that should cut down on the cpu usage.

I use Azureus and after a while it eats up a LOT of CPU and Memory, but I'm guessing it's because of java. You should also check your firewall and antivirus progs, sometimes they will start using resources like crazy since they usually scan everything that goes in and out of your computer.

I'm starting to get the same problem more and more.
Before it would never give me any problems and maybe like a week ago I started getting those problems (1 and 2). First client I had installed on this computer was SHAD0W's but I uninstalled cause I thought it might be the client causing those problems. Now I'm using Nova Torrent but still getting the same problems.

Same problem, in fact just posted a topic about it in this section called "BT F***in.."

Anyway.. I've tried just about every client (Azeurus, Shadows, regular, ABC, TorrentStorm)

Works fine for some torrents, most it doesnt.

It worked fine about a month or two ago.

    Win XP/SP1
    1.5 GB RAM
    P4 1.6 Ghz
My current setup stats (like anyone cares...):

    ASUS A8N32-SLI Motherboard
    AMD 4400+ Dual-Core CPU
    Windows Vista (Ultimate 32bit)
2 GB (2x1GB) Corsair XMS RAM
2x250 GB (in RAID 0) HDDs
EVGA GeForce 7950 GTX 512 MB
    Creative X-FI Fatal1ty XtremeGamer

    Also sporting a black MacBook
    Revision/Release 1
    Upgraded to 2GB RAM.

Alright, I switched over to ABC client and set the max peer connections to 60 (Action>ABC Preference>Advance Settings). Don't get the problem anymore, thought this might help some people.

I logged on to see if I could find a solution to this very issue. I use Yet ABC version 2.6.1 and that dang thing locks up on me almost every other time I use it. It jams up by useing 99 percent cpu and it seems to have something to do with other programs I'm useing. I first started noticing it when I was encoding dvd's and such so i figured the problem might be with doing two things at once but now it seems to just lock up whenever it feels like it. Another problem it has is that it never shuts down properly. I almost always have to end task on it after I close it.

I found out the cause of my problems with 100% cpu time and bit torrent clients. It was the program Xfire.

I uninstalled Xfire, and magically all my torrent problems disappeared, reinstalled it and yep, the problems came back.

I'm curious if anyone else with this problem has Xfire installed also?
    Coming soon!

well I too have X-Fire but I cant say for sure that my problems started around the same time. I have only had X-fire installed for about 4 days or so but I'm pretty sure that I have been having issues for over a week or so. Anyway I uninstalled X-fire and will try that for a few days to see if it improves any.
