To make a CD play in your DVD drive you need to make a VCD. Here is a guide. http://www.dvdrhelp.com/divxtovcd.htm
It requires VCDEasy as Spongebob Squarepants recommends, but the guide runs through that.

Is there a way you can burn an avi files staight to disc without having to encode it etc, but obviously it has to be picked up on a dvd plyer??
The reason i'm asking this is because when converting an avi file to a mpeg fie it seems to take hours, is there ways around this???

You could bye one of the new DVD players that can play .avi files, otherwise I don't believe that you can.
I've got my fingers crossed for you that someone corrects me on that.
