I had this very same problem. I would like to know how to fix it also. It wasn't an HP though.

is it integrated sound? or a pci sound card?

if it's integrated sound, which motherboard/chipset is it?

(all this can be found using aida32)

    okay...

on the back of your computer, is the place where you plug in your speakers (and similar ports where you would plug in a microphone) towards the top...or bottom?

and are they going vertically, or horizontally?

Just a hint. I've ran into problems with my Boston Acoustics speakers and the drivers Windows XP installs. My speakers need a digital output signal, and a special driver.

    Good work guys!

Its time to stop pissing around tho, YOU, take the cover off, and look on the motherboard, for THIS chip or the equivalent : Stereo AC'97 codec Analog Devices AD1885 chip.

Its a small chip, maybe 3\4 " square, and usually on the MB near to where you plug in sound etc.

Whatever that # is . . . then you report back here. You will end up getting the driver off of driver.com etc, or right from the manufacturer of the chipset.

Now I want you to look at this page, at the top, where it says TOP Companies.

    http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/

    Analog Devices
    • Avance Logic
    • Aztech Labs
    • CMedia
    • Creative Labs • Crystal
    • Diamond Multimedia
    • Ensoniq
    • ESS Technology
    • OPTi • Packard Bell
    • Roland
    • SoundPro
    • Yamaha
    • Zoltrix
