Kazaa tops searchers' list
By Matthew Liddy
MP3s and music-sharing have remained at the front of many Internet users' minds in 2003, with Australian-owned file-sharing program Kazaa topping search engine Yahoo's list of the year's most searched-for terms.
The music industry has this year been fighting the trend of free music downloads over the Internet, both by suing those involved in the practice and by setting up sites where users can pay to download songs legally.
But Yahoo's figures showing that Kazaa was the most popular search term of 2003 suggest Internet surfers remain interested in finding free music online.
So interested in fact that Kazaa - a file-sharing program which allows people to swap music, video and other files - beat out Harry Potter and Britney Spears in the Internet's most searched-for stakes.
Harry Potter, the boy wizard star of JK Rowling's children's books, took out the second spot, with television show American Idol sitting in third position.
Paris Hilton, the hotel heiress who made headlines in Australia during her visit to help promote the Melbourne Cup, made number eight on the list.
The full list of the top 10 Yahoo searches of 2003 is:
1. Kazaa

3. American Idol
4. Britney Spears
5. 50 Cent
6. Eminem

that paris hilton video was so awesome :). Secondly how many of those top 10 searchs were actually legit high(Er) quality video or audio files? Being the FT network the sucess rate the way the things are going will not be that sucessfull. FT currently still holds the p2p crown in general for popularity etc because it has the support of the mainstream p2p crowd. Nice article thanks!.
