hi all. I'm one of those people who have run the gambit on different types of service providers and connection types...been on dialup with aol, attworldnet, earthlink and on cablemodem with roadrunner and earthlink and now back to dialup with yet another isp.
The question remains the same though in my mind...what's it all worth to ya? what you are doing now....this sharing.
I've shared a lot in my time on the internet...not only in terms of files but also with help and technical advise...teaching people to use various filesharing clients like kazaa and xs. I was very instrumental during the formulative years in helping KaZaA to grow into the aol-ish monstrosity it is now.
I even spent countless hours in xs hubs helping people..not under this name but under others. I've shared so many tips, tricks, and files i can't count em all.
While on broadband i think i really shared the most...because I COULD. when on earthlink broadband (cablemodem) I was able to upload at around 43kbps..and I uploaded several movies onto the KaZaA network and helped to spread anime over the fasttrack network.
While on XS i answered the same questions over and over again: "how do I share my files on this thing?, "how do I search?" etcetera..etcetera.
When I was without net access entirely do to job loss and financial difficulties I continued to rip DVD movies (i owned) to div-x so I could share these when my finances improved and I would once again be able to have broadband.
I also have some rare anime as well that I ripped from dvd and acquired in hopes of having it distributed via p2p to other enthusiasts...as well as several...almost countells martial arts movies stemming from the shaw brothers to Zatoichi to Toshiro Mifune/Kurosawa.
Now i find myself once more humbled...a lowly dial-up user..and those same people who once welcomed me with open arms into their communites..DC, irc now shun me...based solely upon my ability to upload at such limited rate or to download too slowly for their tastes..
it's just not fair i tell ya...i'm just ranting i suppose..but it makes me question the worth of all that time spent sharing/trading/helping/acquiring/distributing/redistributing...while i was doing it It felt great..REALLY awesome! I felt like I was doing something like I was giving back to a comunity (fellow filesharer's) who had given so much to me...and now
I find that all those past contributions were worth nothing and have been completely forgotten..with comments like "get cable/dsl u cheap bastard!" or other idiotic comments like "your not sharing enough" or "your downloading too slow" or "your speed sucks"
It's really heartbreaking to come to the conclusion that my past contributions..tho great in my eyes now seem completely forgotten or not cared about by others...
i said all that just to make you think or rethink your own contributions...IS FILESHARING giving you a false sense of ACCOMPLISHment and filling some void in your life that would best filled by some other means?
what are you neglecting and ignoring in your dedication/perseverance and enthusiam to a cause which when it boils down to it...only brings joy to you in your own mind..and will be soon forgotten by others..almost as if it never mattered at all...

First of all, sorry to hear about your misfortune. Having broadband and then going back to dialup for an active p2p user is pretty tough.
Unfortunately most ppl have short memories when they get what they want in all aspect life and p2p is not any different. I have had ppl cancel my dl 5 minutes after they finished what they wanted from me so such treatment that you describe does not come as a total shock.
With exception of a handful of good ppl out there most ppl want what you have period. If you don't have it anymore they go elsewhere. I have gotten 5 invites just this week to private hubs from ppl I have never talked to once. They would not want me for a second if I left share folder behind.
You sound like a good guy who wants to help ppl and that's very commendable. If one is lucky, one would find a core group of good ppl in filesharing community which won't change they way they treat one if one's sitatution changes. As for the rest, they are normally out the door as soon as they get what they want.
PS. Sorry for the rant but a bit depressed tonight

P2P is sort of an, anonymous if you will, file exchange. Rarely is any chatting taking place between two members. I know it's not anonymous in terms of IP addresses and the RIAA, but seldom do people see beyond just a Kazaa or WinMX username.
There are web communities I am part of that make me feel good about my contributions. Call them 'pirated music' sites or whatever you want if you will, but to me, my contributions matter.

For a typical broadband account, the person has six times the download speed as the upload speed. On dialup the ratio is about three to two of download to upload speed. So there's no way a person could be called a leech while on dialup.
If you have something rare, then they can wait. If it is popular, then they can get it from someone else. I don't see why anyone would be angered at your slow speed. If it is a question of slots, then maybe you have too many simultaneous uploads and downloads going at once, which I can see would frustrate people. For example, I have two slots open in WinMX, and it looks retarded to see two people occupying them each downloading at .27 KB / second.

Thats just the way IRC works man. The peeps i roll with say hey modem is just like ne other connection but some of these more hardcore swappin chans are all "OMG PWN THE DIALUPPER NOW!!!!" ::every1 leaves chan screaming::.

hehe if i had to use dial up again, i would not like it for the speed, but i would accept it.
i would use what ever p2p program i could. to me i dont discriminate on what someones connection is.
if i could only afford dial up i would use dialup.
but i like said we already do private p2p anyways, but for the general use i believe that dial up users are just as good.
heres an example although i know people already know this.
say the file i want is called gamedemo.exe
and the file is 10 megs
so i can swarm the download from 10 users who happen to be on dial up.
my download can be 20kbs, if each uploader gave 2 kps upload.
that is the beauty of it, every one can contribute there share.
people will share with anyone, even on dc hubs and u know dark, u can go back on xs u are welcome there, and *even i dont go on much * do to moodiness point is u are welcomed at lots of places.

obviously your in the wrong crowd. When im online sharing or downloading.. Thiers no talking, everyones away from their pc, or queued up the files or just leave their pc on all night sharing and such.
Before you went back to 56k, you should messaged all your buddies and people on your network and let them know your going back to modem cause of finances or just cause their hassling you or what ever thing you want to tell them. Im sorry to hear about that, and we all was on dial up one time or another.. except these young kids.. who was born with a 20 gig hard drive and a 512 meg ram in their hands.. and a cable modem as an unbilical cord..

I know exactly how you feel, Dark Messenger. I'm on a "lowly" dial-up connection too but not because I'm too cheap; I simply can't afford to get cable where I live. I'm a half mile down a gravel road that is crossed by power lines-- the cable co. wants $1000 up front to bury a line out to here.
I contantly find myself getting kicked off downloads, no matter what P2P program I have tried--maybe I should look into joining one of these private hubs I keep hearing about. But I have 8.3 gigs to share on this machine, (and several times more when I get my local network up and running again), and there's never any lack of people lining up to download from me.
People like us, lowly dial-uppers, just have to try and make the best of it. And for those who look down their noses at us "lowly dial-up users" and click "cancel download" when we finally get to the top of the queue, I believe in karma. Everytime they disconnect us they are inviting fate to have their cat piss in their bed or have a rock flip up from a truck tire on the freeway and crack their windshield.
