Ok, I'm new to all of this P to P stuff and Winmx. I've set up a directory for sharing files but I would like some advice.
For example I have Queen - A Night at the Opera. Do I load the whole album as individual files, in the share directory or as a single folder?
This might appear to be a rather simple/stupid question but I don't know what I'm doing and various things don't appear to be working properly so I don't know if its me or the program. I wish this thing had a user manual.
Many thanks in advance. :bk
i would just put each indvidual file in your shared directory, and if you want to keep things a little neater, put them in a folder that is named the album name. Be sure to share that folder in winmx though. So when you select your shared directory, make sure to include subfolders.

if u want u could take each individual file and put them in a .zip file so if someone wanted the whole album they could d/l the zip and then unzip it
What wesr mentioned is a good idea.
Zip your files ,and try this.
Example your albums is called nite at the opera, well make a zip file can call it "nite at the opera.zip.mp3"
Now this is a zipped file and your individual files are inside, and you have added the extension mp3 at the end. (reason for this is it appears in the more popular searches in the p2p apps much better)
Now people can unzip it after they download but also I accidently discovered you can actually play the file even though it is zipped. Not sure why but I accidently clicked on a zipped file with mp3 extension the other day and it played!
I then changed the name by taking off the mp3 extension and was able to unzip it and have all the individual files.
Weird huh? Try it and see.
There is also a app called album wrap that makes your individual album files into one mp3 and is then extractable with a free utility.
Do search for album wrap and get it, so when you download a file with albw as part of the file name you can then extract the individual files.
Do searches for albums by entering a search for albw and see what I mean.
Adding that mp3 extension to the zip files also does another thing, which is bypass the limits of some servers. Some servers only allow the sharing of mp3 files. In regards to searching for files with novelty extensions such as .wsx or .albw, you will have best results with WPNP and OpenNap servers, for on SlavaNap servers these file extensions must be manually entered by the server owner in order to be shared.
I probably did not explain well.
the letters albw are part of the file name added by the application album wrap. They are not a extension like mp3 or zip. I just mentioned it because you can find complete albums by searching with the term albw in your music searches.
also albums using album wrap can be played like a normal mp3 with the added feature of being you are able to extract the individual song files, as if you had zipped it.
Hope this explains it better.
Thank you all for your advice and information. I'm off now to read everything I can about this proggy. And as always I'll be back with even more questions.:hole
I did a search for album wrap on a p2p app and actually was able to get not only the freeware utility to extract the album files, but a copy of the actual album wrap application that creates the albw files.
Just a hint :-)
eclectica :for on SlavaNap servers these file extensions must be manually entered by the server owner in order to be shared.
Actually files such as zip are allowed files as a standard option but most turn it off.
Good!!! Another Queen fan!!! ;)

If that is granted, all else follows
how do u change like an .mp3 name to a .zip file so u can unzip. i didnt know u could change the name of the extension. how do u do that
Just right-click and the select 'Rename'. On the default for XP, you can't change the extenstion. Open explorer and under
Tools > Folder Options > View
uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types'
That should do it (I needed help with this before on ZP, now I can share what i know :;))
