It may seem that I'm a big fan of Windows, but I really wanted to replace it with the less resource hogging Linux. The only thing that stopped from doing so is that have my games wouldn't work on the computer (Starcraft for an example), my USB printer would have trouble and my misc. computer devices (ex. zip drive) would not have guranteed correct performance. It was just too much of a sacrfice of me.

    I'm a Linux fan.

I know the problems you've faced and the main reason why is you've either downloaded a cheap and nasty bare bones Linux or you've bought a very old distro.

The newer Linux's such as Mandrake have all the Drivers for most hardware going.

I had Linux Mandrake 7 Deluxe which cost me £50.00 (About $80) and I found it easier to set up then windows because it done everything without giving me a million prompts and was faster because it didnt reboot a million times.

www.mandrake.com has a preview of Mandrake 8.2 which I must say looks better then anything Microsoft could developt so go check it out.

As to your comments regarding nothing works on Linux, most programs now a days which are "good" and not cheap crappy programs are made for other os's such as Linux, MacOS, IRIX etc etc so if you go to the manufacters website you should be able to purchase the alternative product.

Also have you never heard of WiNe ? this is a windows emulator which will emulate a windows environment and will let you run any windows program you want.

I'm not a Linux expert but if you got any questions just keep posting and I'll do my best to answer them.

I thought the basis idea that orgianted Linux is that it would be open source and FREE!!! Now all these programming teams and making money off their versions. I guess it's only reasonable, but it sure would attract many more people if the OS was free. (Some versions are free, yes I know)

I understand what you mean MusicMan but lets look at some facts.

Windows 2000 shipped in england for £250.00, for that you got not much more then the basic OS and some small programs.

For £50.00 Linux Mandrake you get 6 CD's - 2 of which contain the operating system and 4 contain many programs such as firewalls networking utilities and not to mention programming languages such as c++ pearl and all the rest.

If your talking about value for money then Windows doesn't compare to Linux.

And remember you can get Linux for free, but it's only the bare bones system.

There are more people in the world who buy software then there are people who download it for free.

Remember, there are very large company's such as the one I work for who have around 300 computer's in one office who all need legitimate licences, and have many more offices in need of those licenses.
