    Homepage Problem

Ok, so i reloaded windows and started from scratch. I've since installed Spybot, AVG 7, AIM, Nero 6 Ultra, and System Mechanic. I've been having a big problem with my homepage on IE. I set it to My Yahoo, however, upon restarting my computer, it resets to a "SUPER SEARCH" site. The address only has numbers in it, something like 81.811.82 or something. I ran Spybot, and a couple of things poped up. I deleted the problems, then scanned again. Alexa poped up on the second search. I deleted it, then set my homepage to My Yahoo, then checked the box in SPybot that allows you to Lock your homepage from changes....it didnt work. Also AVG caught a worm the first time i scanned. I'm at college and they pretty much let the worms and virii run wild. could the worm or alexa be responsible...any ideas????????

    WHAT version of Windows?

You've been hijacked already, if I were me, I would wipe it out and start over.

    Install windows, back it up.

Install ONE software, test it, back it.

Install another software, test it, back it up . . . .

Don't get in a hurry, and dont install CRAP software and think that your name brand OTHER Crap software will rescue you.

    You DO NEED a firewall

You DO NEED current antivirus definitions

If you by chance had installed XP, you may have a System Restore point, . .

Sounds like you've got a browser-help object installed on your computer...before you do anything drastic like reformatting your drive..pay a visit to this site: http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

download BHODemon 1.0 install it and run it...It will show you what's hijacking your homepage and give you the option to disable it.

Or, you can just install yet another software until the next disaster when you will need yet another software to dig yourself out again.

    Swiss Cheese anyone?

It's his responsability to look out for his own computing environment, no one forced him to install Bonzai Buddy type crapware.

    Thanks

OK, here's what happened. It would only return to that page after a restart. I figured i'd be going home in a week, so i'll wait till then to reinstall windows yet again, that way i'll be safe from these viruses that own my colleges network. It was a file called "update911.js". AVG didnt catch it. With system mechanic, it has Panda Antivirus with it, which caught it and cured it. However, panda seems like it uses alot of resources. Under the processes tab in the task manager it has 3 components, Pavfires, Pavsrv51, and Pavproxy. They use about 14,000k, 4500k, and 2700K of memory. I had originally used norton system works. I think my best bet would be to use just Norton Anitvirus, which was NOT loaded on the clean install of windows when i got the virus, along with a basic installation of system mechanic for defrag, error checking, and other little useful utilities that dont run in the backround. Oh yeah... Does anyone know what i should say to my university. earlier this year i recieved 300 Viruses in 6 days. Thats not a typo...Norton cleaned the same viruses "Gaobot", "Blaster", all day long for 6 straight days. When i called to explain...they told me i must have downloaded the virus, which is impossible. Since i'm connected all day long, the virus just pounded my cpu. I dont think they caught it cause our university doesnt use XP, which most of the viruses i caught only effect XP. Other people with XP have had problems too.

    INSTALL THE SECURITY UPDATES!!!!!

Really, the first thing you need to do with a new windows 2000/XP/2003 install is to firewall it so you have a chance of connecting it to the internet for long enough to download the patches from winodows update without somthing getting in.

300 viruses? That has gone well past annoying and back to something to boast about!
I'm not really malicious. I'm a nice guy.

    I did

I installed all the patches and updates. Is there any way to get the patches on cd? I use BigFix right now. With the firewall...which is the best?

Don't use Norton Security! It sucks up too much system resources. Do, ZoneAlarm or Sygate. There are many other good ones, but not Norton.
