Are there multiple users? If there are, I don't think you can.

I'm the only user on my machine, and I want it to go straight to the desktop too...

I disabled all the guest accounts and took of the password feature, but I still get a login screen....:(

If you're running XP Pro/2k Pro (2k gets ride of the ctrlaltdel logon) it's fairly easy..

Run > gpedit.msc (type it in...)

Now head down to "User Config > Admin Templates > System > Don't display the welcome screen > right click > Properties > Enable

Restart to check it...and you're done.

Also I might add that I believe some of those tweaking programs can do it for you. Tweak XP is a bit pricey for me... meaning its not free, but theres freeware tweakers. Plus they got some nice other stuff.
My current setup stats (like anyone cares...):

    ASUS A8N32-SLI Motherboard
    AMD 4400+ Dual-Core CPU
    Windows Vista (Ultimate 32bit)
2 GB (2x1GB) Corsair XMS RAM
2x250 GB (in RAID 0) HDDs
EVGA GeForce 7950 GTX 512 MB
    Creative X-FI Fatal1ty XtremeGamer

    Also sporting a black MacBook
    Revision/Release 1
    Upgraded to 2GB RAM.
