i did search but it didnt really help my upload speed is like 20kb+ and my download is like 0 to 10 at most i did a speed test i do 1.7 mb cable thats pertty fast i dont get why i still get that low download speed i also use that EXPERIMENTAL download client and i limit my up load and set it at slow cable/dsl still the same fast is also still the same i was wonder if one of you guys knows what going on i see some ppl that say they get 300+kbs is kinda crazy iv been tring to download something for the past 5 days and its only at 70% that seems very slow to me thnx in advance to anyone that can help me out

first off... what client are you using, and about ur cable, you probz downloading from someone on dial-up so thats why its slow..just because you are on a high-speed connection, doesn't mean everything you download will be fast. Speeds vary for multiple reasons.

I had this problem. Are you behind a router/server by any chance? You may need to forward ports.
Try searching google for your your router and Bittorrent.

More info on your system would be helpful. It could be that seeder to leecher ratio is lopsided or there may be no seeders at all. I would also recommend trying a different bittorrent client since the original experimental client has not been updated in some time, the client I use is Azureus and I love it. I would also recommend ABC or Shadow's client. Here are some links if you want to check them out:

If you use ABC, look at what colour the torrents show as. If it is yellow then you aren't getting credit for your upload. Double click it and you can see the effect of this - everyone will have you "snubbed". That means they wont upload to you.

i got abc when i download its looks yellowish goldish but im downloading better but still slow is at 8 and im uploading at 10 about the same how do i make it turn from yellow/gold to what color it should be so i can speed up the download

I didn't expect it to go faster, it is just easier to see what is going on. The torrent should be green, not that manky yellow/greeny colour.
I had this exact problem and I believe many people do. Sadly I didn't fix my server and I don't know how to fix your router.
What I do know is it is to do with port-forwarding.
Type the name and model of your router into google and search for bittorrent. Failing that, search to find out how to forward ports.
I'm really above my head here, so sorry for being vague (and generally useless). Hopefully someone else will be able to help....

Remember if more than one person uses BT, things are slightly more complicated. You can't forward the same port to different computers (i.e. other computers on your network).
The set up for my lan is:
Ports-----------------IP Address
6881-6882 = 192.168.0.2
6883-6884 = 192.168.0.3
6885-6886 = 192.168.0.4
6887-6889 = 192.168.0.7
(please don't use these IP addresses yourself! The above guide tells you how to find each computers IP address for your network)
IP addresses 5 and 6 don't use BT. If they decided to join, the other computers would have to give up one or more port. Each current BT download requires a port.
Open Yet ABC -> Action -> ABC Preference.
In this window each user must set the "Minimum port number" to the lower of the range of ports given. For example 192.168.0.3 would enter 6883. 192.168.0.7 would enter 6887 and so on.
DON'T change the upper port. I seem to remember that will mean loss of connection to the tracker.

Lower your upload ratio in 1kbs steps till your download speed goes up. Keep doing that till it seems to top out then set it one or two kb above that.

Even at 256 or 384kbs on your upload you can still swamp it out by surfing/using other clients (AIM/IRC/p2p programs) whilst using BT. What happens is you can't keep up with the requests and you lag which slows your download. It's a bitch on DSL...probably not bad on cable, could happen though.

hm okay, now I have a question...

I followed the instructions and added port forwarding on my hardware router settings. But now when I download off of BT, none of my roommates can get online or it's very slow for them. I guess BT's maxing out our DSL bandwith? Hm Maybe I should return it back to no port forwarding, but anyways, is there a way to limit how much bandwith each IP user gets?

Although BT maxes out my bandwidth, we never have a problem loading webpages. We may be back to limiting upload again. I havn't used a BT client that alllows you to limit your download. It is supposed to be controlled by limiting your upload. The less people you upload to the more that will snub you, hance slower downloads. Sadly I find the more I limit upload the lower my upload/download ratio becomes! For lots of reasons I limit upload to 8k. In return I recieve my bandwidth maximum of just over 100k. It takes ages to seed back everything I take (my upload is set to 125%)
It may be possible to limit the amount of bandwidth a user can have, but remember that they will still be limited to it no matter how many people are online.
Hopefully someone else will provide a better solution.

Actually when BT is running I have problems of slowing down as well. For example, when I stream 128kbps online radio, it keeps buffering up when it never did before. When I turned off port forwarding and it goes back to 'yellow' in the BT program, everything is fine. My roommate says that I'm maxing out the bandwith of our DSL modem... but don't routers automatically split up the connection between users? My BT download yeesterday was using up about 130kbps... I'm pretty sure our DSL modem's limit is higher than that. Oh yea, he was trying to play Warcraft III and it kept lagging for him.

Anyhow, I'm trying different settings out like only opening a few port-forwarding things, so I'll see if I can get anything to change.
