If you used a program like Boot XP or something like it, than when you installed SP1 it would change the Kernal..the old boot screen would no longer work. If you didn't use a program before SP1..than I'm lost & have no idea. Here is a link to Boot XP if you want to give it a try:

I have had XP on my home pc with sp1+ru1 installed on it It runs fine don't have any problems it's been installed for over 4 months. I would have to agree with lion7718 that you possibly corrupted the windows kernel with a program like bootxp(that only applies if you do infact have sp1 installed) if not I am also lost I would just reformat. that tends to be the main fix for windows os's lol

    like honestly, who does that?!?!

WOAH, before you format your computer, wait for a few more suggestions and try a few more things. I've never heard of that problem being caused by pirated software.

Can you even get into safe mode? On boot, randomly tap F8 right after the BIOS, it will bring up a screen giving you options, choose Safe Mode.

If you can get into windows that way, try removing any programs like bootxp (as lion suggested), then try removing SP1. You did ask it to make a backup....RIGHT?

If you didn't have a backup, you could allways try system restore.

I actually had that problem with keys. All it did, was cancel setup. It checks before installing SP1 if you have a valid key or not.

At least...thats what SP1 did, if they changed something other than Java VM in SP1a, thats news to me.

Even on that site, it says that if you don't have a valid key, it won't let you access updates.

Maybe I got lucky though, or maybe you had bad luck with your copy.

Oh, and what do you mean "if" I have a legal copy? Of course I paid MS a ton of money.

Wrong. If SP1 had anything to do with it, do you think starting in Safe Mode would help?!

The only thing that happens with SP1 is that it refuses to install if you have an 'invalid' CD-key.

If you really want SP1(a), do a Google search for 'Slipstreaming Windows XP SP1'. That'll show you how.

m sure its the bootscreen thingy...theres something known as a loginui.exe (spell check-not sure) and another similar thing . if you have dual boot then replace both of them by default, m sure if u search on net you will get it...

i dont think it can be piracy thing as 90%pirated comps keys are fckgw .... and it dosent install sp1 on it in the first place.

He stated that it crashes before the Windows boot window, so I doubt he can get in to Safe Mode, altho pressing F8 a gajillion times doesnt hurt.

Now to the meat of things. When you install SP1, it basically, replaces everything. Those of you geeky enough to have watched this unpack know what I mean. After you unpack SP1, and it needs to reboot, what is has to do is replace your old XP files and association with the new ones, and clean up, and that's where it is puking out.

It is just as likely that in this process, there's a device driver problem. Or a chipset driver problem, or a . . . well you can guess it to death.

The question still remains, how and to what extent can he make forward progress? THIS IS THE QUESTION that we should all be ready to tackle, what if XP gets botched?

The answer for everyone that doesnt enjoy reading scorchie posts, is to be prepared for it, and not have anything valuable on your C: drive. Have backups of your software, and even use the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" to export your environmental preferences to a D: drive etc.

For all the time it takes to fiddle with workarounds, I still wouldnt trust the results. Long before now, he could have reinstalled XP, and his drivers and SP1, AND turned off unwanted Services, and reinstalled his apps.

i have a legit key, worked before on other comps for installing sp1

btw my comp was activated before reinstalling sp1 and microsoft states that i wont need to activate it so piracy isn't a factor in this problem

i don't think sp1 causes your comp to not restart though even if you have a pirated key, where can i find information about this chelsey12?

If you pop in the XP disc, then reboot, I think there are some recovery options, you could try using those to replace system files, or at least get a diagnostic on whats wrong.

If you can't autorun it in the BIOS, you can also try the 6 floppy boot disk set for XP. They're available on the MS site.
