It has been a long time dream for many in the P2P community to open just one client and have access to vitually any file-sharing network. Some have attempted this feat with mixed results, as witnessed by ML Donkey and Shareaza.

While Shareaza has perhaps made greater headway than most, MetaMachine stands to bring this concept into the mainstream with the release of eDonkey/Overnet .52 (the plug-in feature is availbe for all MetaMachine clients.) With over 1.5 million users, the possibiltiy of connecting to multiple networks is now knocking on "mainstream's" front door.

I've asked around about this, to see what the difference is between Shareaza's current actual support of multiple networks and this "plug-in" concept. Turns out Shareaza has already had support for plug-ins for some time now at the developer level, no one has taken advantage of it though. Is this going to be any different?

The real difference I noticed with this version of Overnet is that the number of sources can be limited, I'm not sure what good this is, I always want more sources and not less.

Anybody else try this out yet? Any developers want to work on plug-ins?

It's an interesting question to ask if this will be any different. IMHO, I would say yes. Why? MetaMachine, the eDonkey2000 network and the eDonkey/Overnet clients are considerably more popular than Shareaza. Even if you're a die-hard eMule fan, its hard not to know what's going on in the eDonkey world. The attention given to this network alone should generate enough interest to temp third party programmers into developing plug-ins. For example, the development crew for the Poisoned project are considering a Windows based plug-in for their Mac FastTrack client...I don't think it would be too difficult to adapt it to the Overnet/eDonkey client.

In any case, it's good to see these clients aggressively competing with each other and listening to the demands of the P2P community.

Why would ANYONE want a plug in for FastTrack?

So you can get caught by the RIAA and get infested with the crappy files on the network so it polutes other networks?

It's a Plugin and I would do it for experimental purposes, it's not like it will even be in the distro....

I believe that a p2p program should not try to be a jack-of-all-trades. The program should be innovative on its own merit, not just due to the fact that it is multi-network. I have found that a multi-network p2p is usually far less than the original client.

A p2p client should focus on:
1) being user friendly
2) having a viable network that is fast and stable
3) having the necessary features and not focusing on trying for every possible feature.

Look at Shareaza... it has a beautiful GUI, every possible feature, several networks, and is touted as great, yet the performance is not there. Shareaza just sits there and waits to find people... or, worse yet, finds them and never downloads.

If a multi-network p2p program is to succeed, it must function as well or better than the original program and have something that is needed or desired by users to cause others to migrate to it.

I definely agree with you Wingnut2600. I find myself using Shareaza less and less unless I want to download from G2.

Now I use:
Shareaza - G2 and Gnutella(rare)
Emule 0.3c - Edonkey(often)
Kazaa Lite K++ 2.4.3 - FastTrack(medium use)

If a FT plugin were developed and put into use, would ED2K use it's hash, or Kazaa's crappy hash?

I was just thinking, if it used ED2K's hash, it would be reasonably easy to avoid the fakes, as usually you get the little bug icon or a comment indicating it is so. Not that the fakes wouldn't still spread.

On the issue of more networks. Why does it matter? If an app can pull it off, more power to it.
