    Question Hard Drive Question

My computer came with a 30 GB drive(C) with windows 98se on it. Later on I bought a 60 GB(D) and put win2k on it. Now the 30GB one is exhibiting signs of failure (Clicking sounds but not all the time) so i bought a new 160 GB HD.

My problem is this: the MBR is on the 30GB but I want to use the 60GB for my boot drive(c drive) and use the 160 for storage. How do I transpose the MBR to the 60 GB drive so I can boot from it. Will Partion Magic do it or will i have to just start from scratch. Any help would be appreciated.

what i would do is, take out the 160. Use a something like norten ghost , copy the 30 to the 60 then take that out and and use the 60 and the 160. Windows will recognize the 60 ::if you put it on master:: and use its operating operating sys and the 160 ( storage) shouldn't have 1 anyway.Mine was i just had a 60 on it and then i bought a 120 and just poped it in and it was recognized using ::seagates:: installation utillity.

Run a S.M.A.R.T. test on it by downloading whatever diagnostic software your HD maker provides on their site.

You may have a fucked up boot record... It's trying to read the wrong spots on your HD thus giving off a insane clicking that sounds more like a bad fan then a hard drive (bad explanation). I've had it happen once...scared the living shit outta me as I had around 25 gigs worth of unburned shit on the drive.

If you feel uneasy about it (even if it's fixed) or if it is fucked up, then use it to store all your music/movies that are already burned. Use it as your 'bitch' drive and run stuff from CD onto it for use. It's annoying to watch a movie or listen to music with the damn CDROM buzzing away...

What OS are you running? I really don't think you can do ghost a copy of XP.

In any case, I think its allways a good idea to start from scratch every few months (more or less depending on how hard you try to tweak, lol). That way you allways end up with the latest programs, updates, and your computer isn't filled with the abandoned crap from uninstalled programs.

It doesnt matter where your MBR is.

here there anywhere Windows knows where it is, because its always on a certain place on the hard drive, and when you dual boot, etc, windows knows where to find it.

Just pick the drive you want to run Windows from. Make SURE its the Primary and Master. ! ! ! !

Install the O/S. Whatever you have on the other drives is just there, period. If you old O/S is still on what is now the D; drive, just delete it, bbye.

Theres your new MBR, happy happy joy joy

    .
Try mucking your MBR up (I didn't say it 'moved' - just that it was misdirected) then populating or selecting everything on said drive and grabbing properties for it. The bugger will start buzzing away like mad. ;)

I actually hadnt really read your post. so in case you thought I was saying anything contrary, I wasnt. If you muck up a MBR, or your MFT, youre in for a thrill. NOT

I was merely pointing out, that if he just gets on with his business for the other drives, and then moves his data, he will be fine.
