avi is the mp3 of videos. Like mp3s, you decide how much you compress it. You compress it using codecs (divx and xvid usually)

Actually avi is just a wrapper for whatever A/V data you choose...

In answer to your question, people use a number of codecs ....that all do pretty much the same damn thing.

    Mpeg4
    MS Mpeg4
    VKI Mpeg4
    DivX
    XviD
    ect

XviD/DivX encoders are used the most...cinpak and all that old school shit is out the window...bleh

    I prefer XviD :P

Xvid is a bit nicer looking than divx(unless you use divx to enc video with to the Nth pass, whitch would take many gresume enc hours). In most cases when a movie is ripped in an avi format the audio is either put a vbr mp3 file(smaller, better sounding) being a 1 cd release or the AC3(dolby digital) witch is the world better sound wise but then you must compramise a whole lot of space because with that type of audio it is most likely to be a 2 cd release somwhere aound 1.4 gig in size.

In general terms, DivX and XviD are both at the same level of image quality at this point. However, each has its own high and low points, where one does better than the other.

It's hard to say whether one has the advantage in the long run. XviD is open source, but DivX has all that money behind it. Who knows?

Some people used divX/Xvid (.avi) to compressed larger files but I don't like them both because the quality is not sharp enough. WMV 9 Encoder has better picture and best audio 5.1 Surround Sound.
