so im at my friends house...he has a linksys wireless routher and a wireless 802.11 pci card for his desktop. the thing is sumbody in his neighbor hood has a wireless router too hooked up to broadband.
heres the Q...
what happens if he gets on that connection(cause its 100% open, the other router i guess was never setup, not even name changed) and starts to download music from kazaa. what would be the chain of events if the RIAA decided to do anything? how would that work? im really curious.
and just a lil fun fact....the router came with a free pcmcia card and we put it in his dads new laptop that has a built in one, so we were conencted to both routers which both have broadband. does this double our internet or no?
and one more fun fact, by what our dhcp assigned IPis,i figure theirs ELEVEN other people on that router.....
personally, i would stear clear of doing that, since your friend lives near the neigbor (obviously) and thus could potentially be tracked down. though unlikely, by doing this, you're putting yourself at a greater risk legally than if you were just downloading. now if you were just walking down a street one day and you happened to notice an unprotected wireless LAN, then you could get by with it likey, but it would still be very illegal.
2nd question: your internet speeds wont increase really... what you'd have to do is devise a way to have your connected apps split up into 2 groups, one using connection A and the other using B. its prob not worth the hassle.
I have two computer's in my home. One is in the living room and one is in my daughter's room. We thoughht about getting a regular router and running wire but living in an apt. it was nt a cool idea. So we chose to get a D-Link wireless router. So far so good. We have had no real problem. The wireless cards are ing the computers. We tried the USB External kind and really didn't care for them. But we have had no real problems so far. The speed is good. So iit works for us.Originally Posted by wonderboy2005

I live in an apt complex, and one day when i was joking around online my computer detected another network in my neighborhood. I connected and used it for a day or two. I guess they figured out that I was on there cause then the put a block on that only allowed specific MAC addresses. (Which is what I do.) Not that I want to hack back on, cause now i have my own connection, but for my own edification is there any way that someone would be able to get past that block, or should I also put on the 128bit encryption?
I guess where I was going with that post is that they can see when your on there router, and some of them even make logs of who was on and when they were on. By specific MAC address, I know my parents Netgear does. Im not sure if my motorola does though.

just turn off broadcast ID.
Alright what you do is you download a tool called Netstumbler (http://netstumbler.com) and then run the program it picks up all wireless signals.
Find out the MAC address (the burned in address of your wireless card, although there are ways to fake it) of the persons computer which it will display in the menu, and then get some mac address spoofer.
As long as there is no password you should be ready.
Remember using anyones wireless without permission is not nice :]
well for what you want to use it for, its fine. but what d3ft0n3s wanted to do (i assume) was to use his friend's neighbor's wireless 'net access without the neighbor knowing. that is not a good idea.Originally Posted by ROMANTICGUY50
