    Question Just a general CD-R & CD-RW question...

I was just wondering if you guys thought that generic (non-brand name) CD-Rs and CD-RWs were just as good as the brand named ones, as far as quality?

    Thanx :gj

from personal experience..name brands often perform a whole lot better and last longer. In most cases you usually pay more for quality products and in the case of CD-r's it is just a few more dollars towards a 100-pack of cd's that makes a difference in the price between quality brand TDK cd-r 700MB and some off brand. Side not about cd-rw's since you are buying a product that you want to use over and over and over again I believe up into the hundreds of times on the same cd. You are best off to pay a little bit more for a quality product because it will last you that long if you take care of it correctly of course!

It's not too hard to find out which unbranded discs are ok and which branded discs might not be ok: here is a good link to get started: afterdawn cd media . The most interesting article I read on this is this one though remember its old and things change. It is still the best explanation I found of the crucial difference between compatibility and quality.

I have now settled on Taiyo Yuden as I buy them by the hundred and never had a dud and as well as great compatibility they should also still be readable when I get older, losing my hair, many years from now...when I'm 64...john,paul,ringo,george..are you there?

Also Prodisc are highly recommended in some places....I have had some real duds from prodisc from a discount seller in UK, maybe they were factory rejects, but never again.

Anyhow different people will recommend different discs, the main thing is to understand how to choose the ones that suit your purpose and to make sure you can always get them when you need them.

How much do you guys pay typically for 100 packs? Best Buy has had some good deals with BIG rebates... making the CDR's free after the rebates. That dried up now I'm getting 100 packs for $20 of Fuji. I haven't had a dud in over 300 of the Fujis... but I'm wondering if I can get 'em cheaper elsewhere...

It used to make quite a difference ...but now most 40X backwards compatible CDs are pretty much the same. Now there is only a handful of factories making all those brand names.
CD-RWs ...I would recommand staying with a name brand like Kodak or Sony..since CD-RWs are used for backup and data transfer and usually will have more valuable stuff stored on them.

btw... I got some of those 19.95/100 Fuji disks ...yup quite good ...none bad yet.

When I got my first burner 3 yrs ago I would buy a spindle of no name cds which were perfect. Now that I'm on my 3rd burner I find the no name ones don't do the job as well. Plenty of them don't even list the the Max speed or they're 74mins when the packaging states 80mins....

Now I stick with a name brand - Smart Buy - which burn at 48X and have never caused me any problems. Tends to be only a couple of $'s more.

For TY the best price I can get in England is £25 for 100 discs, 40 x and 700MB. It's definitely much cheaper in USA. If anyone knows where to get TY cheaper in Britain I'm interested.

100 pack TDK Cd-R 80 min 700 MB 52X max write speed, Is $26.99 USD + tax so about 30 bucks for 100 cd-r's. 30 cents each quite cheap in my book since the stuff you are burning on there is worth alot more lol. Throughout personal experience I found TDK cd-r/rw's to be the most sucessfull cd-r's I have used since I first bought a burner, I maybe have thrown out 2 or 3 tdk cd's since I started to use that brand and it was only because I was trying to over burn on a vcd :;)
