convert a movie file to an avi file

Simple question first what is the original file format that you are orignally trying to convert from??? mpeg or what and once I know that I can tell you what program is appropriate in order to convert to .avi compressed video format.

its a quick time movie, what i really want to do is get them on a dvd and nero wont import them, so thats why i thought if i could convetr to an avi. i could use it.
