and how about the ol' hard drive?
i have a special edition 40gb western digital. it's ata100. the 8mb cache is nice, but it would probably be faster to get a ata133 hard drive with only 2mb buffer.
but damn, this western digital is loud. and high-pitched. i stuffed socks into the drive cage with it to cut down on the whine, but it's still noticeable. i'm hoping that the sock will make it produce just enough heat to kill it, then i can get one of seagate's 21dB, 7200rpm drives. but those only have 2mb buffer though. gah!!

Both drives are old Fujitsu makes. C-drive is an old 8.4 gig, and D is a 40 gig. Both reasonably quiet, and I always like a small C drive, as I am then forced to transfir my files to the larger drive defragging them in the process, and not worring about a large file loss if I have to reload windows on C.

I have two 4o gigs, western digital.. both at 133ata and im not sure on the buffer, i think ones a 8. both at 72rpm.
the one thing i wish windows could do, that i like about osx, is that if you install a program, then need to reformat/reinstall, you don't hafta reinstall the program. all the dll's that get thrown into the windows folder get wiped, and then you're forced to reinstall the program :-\ that takes a lot of time sometimes (like ms flight sim 2000)Originally Posted by The Hunter

I've got an 80 Gig IBM and a new 120 Gig Seagate Barracuda (which is really quiet). All my music goes on the Seagate, everything else on the IBM.

Hmm, not always hard, it could be a diet problem.
Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be.
IBM 120GB with 8mb something fancy (I'm guessing cache as its been mentioned a few times)
The other I've no idea. 30GB of something old.
I'm really not a hardware person, but I'm kinda excited about what computer part "part 3" is going to be.

Anyone who thinks any hard drive could take advantage of the difference between ATA133, 100, or maybe even 66 is kidding themselves. You can burst little things out of the cache fast, but most stuff comes off the hard drive slower than ATA66.
