K-Lite Codec Pack

I tried to install the K-Lite Codec Pack. I need help. After reading all your praise about this codec pack, I decided to install it. I deleted all my other codecs (except 3) as it requested. They were mpeg2data.ax, mpeg2Decoder and mpeg4.ax.inf. The first two were in C:\Windows\System and the last had that .ax extention, which I do not know. The two Windows\System files can't be cancelled.

All went well until I tried to install the new full K-Lite pack. Up came an error box.

"C:\Windows\System\xvid.ax
Unable to register the DLL/OCX:
External exception C000001D

Click re-try to again, Ignore to proceed anyway (not recommended), or Abort installation. I tried running it again with the same result."

So what do I do now?????? Can someone rescue me? Please!

Search for xvid.ax. It won't let you delete it, but you should be able to move it to another folder. Then click re-try. That worked for me when installing a Nimo Pack. You can delete the old one later. Not sure if this will work, but it might.

Thanks Muff,

I appreciate your reaching out to help me. I have no xvid.ax on my computer. At least not one that Find could locate. Did you mean in the new Codec Pack? The denial does say 'external'. I have no idea where to locate a list of codes to understand C000001D! Afraid I'm still wandering lost in the woods. <smile>

Of course, I have tried renaming the files in Windows\System to get around whatever problem they may be causing, but they can't be renamed.

if ya reboot to safemode, then try to install, it should work.

i would advice you to install only the codecs you need from the creators website. Codec packs tend to mix everything up.

I meant to find that codec already installed on your computer. If it's not there, then I'm out of ideas. Sorry. That Retry/Ignore came up for me because I must've still had an old one that had to be gone before I could install the new one. That safe mode idea sounds good though.

I'm almost back in the land of the living. Thanks to you and to Method 77 for answering my message.

I had been trying to load the Full Pack (removing files I didn't need). So this time I tried another approach. I installed the Basic Pack without any trouble. Then, separately installed (into the same file folder) those files I wanted out of the Full Pack. Who knows why, but doing it that way went smoothly.

What a volume of additional Help you posted. I'll have to copy it all off to go over it a bit at a time.

Good idea--but didn't solve the problem this time. I'll add that to my General List on 'How to Get Out of Trouble of My Own Making.'
