I noticed the source code available for download and wondered what it was all about. Seems to be a number of people who think they will be able to work it out.
I can't wait for the full game to be released, although turning the aliens into iraqis does sound like even more fun!

that sucks. if nothing comes of it in the way of cheating, it wont be so bad, but how likely is that? i hope they get whoever did it. i hope its not being distributed on the net now... that would virtually spell the end for HL2 multi player unless they figure out a way to stop the source from being used for cheating.

I bought half life for playstation 2, and it sucked.. I dont use my pc to play games cause i like using a gaming system for it and not worry about having right video card, processor.. Or sitting at a desk to play. IT be stupid if this game impacted them financially.. But whos to say someone couldnt right their own source code, or use other source codes from differnt games. Maybe they should USE LINUX to block out attackers =)

Why would you CODE a videogame where you have a PC hooked up to the iNTERNET, just asking for trouble.> SHould have a work pc, with no phone jack to code in, and a computer to check email and do web stuff..

the code is available on net and can be compiled, source is about a month or 2 old we dont know what revisions they have made to it since then so all we can do is speculate as to the effect this can have on final product.

as for why have a pc hooked up to net where you code a game?

simple, when your on top of the world with all eyes looking down upon you and eager for the next big thing, ppl tend to get lazy with ordinary things and combine instances where work flow is faster, sure it's cause for irresponsibility but then again look at Micro$oft, they been doing it for years!!

obviously you dont know whats goin on here kevin, this isnt about half-life for ps2 or pc, its about half-life 2 for pc, the game is still a few months away from gold but its source was leaked to the net.

what can happen now is that, coders can compile it and write hacks/modifications to the half-life 2 game which can potentially allow cheating on-line, ruining the experience for others.

how would you like to play a game where the other guy doesnt die.....not much fun is it?!?

thats what the gaming community is buzzing about right now, they want to know what protections will be imbedded to prevent cheating and allow an enjoyable experience, on the other hand the IT community is stressing the fact that the valve computers were hacked due to month old reports of security issues which were not patched at all by microsoft at the time or as of yet who knows.

to get the online capabillity in half life 2, they should make a small download file from the net, that checks if your game is modded, and then instals itself. Furthermore, when you try to run it, it checks also if you've modded since the last time it checked. That's probably what's gonna happen, unfortunetly some idiet will find a way around this.
Note: this is comming from a blind gamer, but what the hell!
edit: This is completely unrelated, but I can't post on zp! I sent hunter a pm, but I had quite a few pm's, tried to delete them, and it wuldn't let me! even if I tried deleting one at a time, etc.

It's simple... If this source is 2+ months old then Valve should just play around with the IP/multiplayer shit BEFORE it's released.

When it comes around the system should be changed enough to bitch slap any older code off any server. So unless your playing with the stolen source you can't cheat.

I personally don't give a rats ass about Half Life... I enjoyed the hell outta 1 and I'll probably hate to based on them trying to hard.

Notice that? The original was simple/easy and fun...then they get all cocky and try making something that blasts doom 3 away and it SUCKS ass. Doom III will probably suck ass compared to Doom II...lol just based on that simple formula...over do it and lose gamers.

Shawners, go play the PC version of HL and HL Blue...they make the PS2 version look like shit...

Half Life will no longer be released this year because of the leak:
Vivendi Universal Entertainment has canned the Christmas launch of Half Life 2 in response to last week's leak of source code onto the Internet.

In a statement today, the games publisher said that Half Life 2, an expected blockbuster, will now contribute to 2004 results.

VUE says that crackers scooped up a third of the code of Half Life 2, making it "almost impossible" for bootleggers to exploit the leak.

Crackers obtained the code probably by exploiting a vulnerability in Outlook and installing keyloggers, according to Valve, the company which develops Half Life.

Shame, I was looking forward to this game.

Half Live Blue Shift was an awesome game! It had simple yet constantly changing puzzles, very unique levels, decent graphics, and an overall realistic/unbuggy game.

Why's it got to be about the crackers?

It appears that their security problems go deeper than a bit of stolen source code:

    Exclamation Have code will travel

I saw the code being offered on a site for download. They explained it wasn't the game but yet the source code with which to look at and maybe make improvements or just hack the game. Can't remember where I saw it though but found it funny after I read the news story on the net. :blah
