Configuring a 56k modem to COM1 in WinME

A friend has a laptop and has recently formatted and installed WinME. He has a PCMCIA card that has a 56k modem, but he's having trouble connecting to the internet. Apparently the modem is set to COM5. He rang AOL, his ISP, and they told him he needs to configure the modem to COM1 or COM4. But they couldn't help him any further.

Does anybody here know how to do this? Does it involve dabbling in the BIOS?

It's been ages since WINME, hold on one sec... OK
Try the control panel and go to the device Manager under System (winme?) (or right click on My Computer and go to Manage) while the pcmcia card is plugged in go to Properties, then under one of the tabs there should be a COM configuration. If it's not there in ME, go to Start-> Settings-> Dialup and Network Connections. Under the Properties (right click on the adapter) there may be a choice to configure the COM ports and IRQ settings)

The real solution is a different operating system and another dialup service WINME + AOL + Computer = Hard Drive Failer + CPU Meltdown

Back from a long break and it seems I'm missing some posts.

Hehe. Hey, this laptop was bargain, trust me.

He can't get broadband where he lives so he's stuck with 56k. So that means no NTL either.

There's no point in using XP as he doesn't really have enough memory to run that and apps as well.

    Thanks for the help.
